Windows gets an AI-powered clipboard upgrade

Published Reach 38

Microsoft just added an AI-powered Advanced Paste tool to Windows 11 in PowerToys 0.81. The feature can convert clipboard text on the fly into Markdown, JSON, or plain text, and lets you prompt OpenAI to translate, summarize, or rewrite code across languages. The catch is that you need your own OpenAI API key and paid credits.

Microsoft just turned the Windows clipboard into an AI playground with its latest PowerToys update.

In PowerToys version 0.81 on Windows 11, users get access to a new feature called Advanced Paste. Hitting Windows Key + Shift + V pulls up a dedicated conversion window right where your cursor is.

Prompting straight from the clipboard

At its base level without AI, the tool instantly strips formatting or converts clipboard data into markdown or JSON.

Flip on the Paste with AI toggle in settings, and an OpenAI prompt box appears. You can ask it to translate text, summarize notes, transform code between different programming languages, or rewrite casual thoughts into polished business speak before dropping them into your document.

The catch is that it requires your own OpenAI API key. You will need to fund your own developer credits, which are separate from a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription.

Why it matters

This strips away the friction of context switching. Instead of opening a browser tab, pasting text into a chatbot, crafting a prompt, and copying it back, the transformation happens natively at the keystroke level.

We think offloading the bill to users via their own OpenAI API keys is a clever shortcut for Microsoft. It allows power users to experiment with automated workflows immediately without forcing Microsoft to subsidize token costs.

That said, requiring paid API credentials creates high friction for everyday users. Until Windows bakes these transformations locally into the OS for free, this remains a niche utility strictly for enthusiasts and developers.
