Windows 11 taskbar gets Microsoft 365 Companions
Microsoft just announced Microsoft 365 Companions for the Windows 11 taskbar, letting you pull up contacts, files, and calendar events with a single click. Similar to the Phone Link panel, it surfaces Microsoft Graph data directly from floating taskbar cards without opening full apps. It's not yet clear when it rolls out or if third parties can tap in.

Checking your next meeting or grabbing a recent spreadsheet usually means Alt-Tabbing into bloated apps.
At Microsoft Ignite 2024, Windows head Pavan Davuluri announced Microsoft 365 Companions. The new feature brings your contacts, recent files, and calendar directly into the Windows 11 taskbar, surfacing your Graph data in a single click.
A lightweight layer for your work data
On stage, Davuluri showed off a floating contacts panel that pops up straight from the taskbar without launching a full app.
The UI mirrors the Phone Link companion Microsoft quietly added alongside the Start menu in Windows 11 24H2, where you can view phone battery and recent texts at a glance. It also resembles the early taskbar integration Microsoft attempted with Teams. So far, Microsoft hasn't detailed rollout dates or confirmed whether third-party developers will ever get access to the same taskbar hooks.
Why it matters
For corporate users living inside Teams, Outlook, and OneDrive, this cuts out noticeable micro-friction throughout the workday. Glanceable widgets inside the OS beat switching windows every ten minutes.
From our perspective, it is a classic Microsoft playbook: turning OS real estate into prime shelf space for its own subscription ecosystem. The risk is taskbar bloat. Windows 10 tried something remarkably similar with its forgotten My People feature before quietly killing it off. If Companions feels cluttered or stays closed to rival apps like Slack or Google Calendar, users might just turn it off.
