Wayfair launches Decorify to redraw your living room and sell you furniture

Published Reach 36

Wayfair just launched Decorify, a free generative AI tool that lets you upload a living room photo and restyle it in aesthetics like mid-century modern or bohemian. Alongside the generated render, it displays a grid of furniture recommendations from Wayfair's catalog. While the tool is free on mobile and desktop, it currently only supports living rooms and can occasionally generate quirky visual glitches.

Decorating a living room usually means either paying for an expensive interior designer or wrestling with clunky AR phone apps that float stiff 3D sofas into your camera feed.

Wayfair is taking a different route with Decorify, a free generative AI tool launched on July 25. You upload a snapshot of your room, pick an aesthetic, and the AI redraws the entire space while lining up Wayfair furniture recommendations on the side.

A fresh coat of pixels with a few hallucinations

Decorify works directly on your phone or desktop browser. Once you upload an image, you pick a design theme from a dropdown list, ranging from specific aesthetics like mid-century modern and farmhouse to vaguer vibes like bohemian or perfectly pink.

Right now, it only supports living rooms. You can restyle the entire space or select a single piece of furniture to swap out.

Keep in mind this is pure generative imagery, not a precise architectural render. The AI might invent weird reflections on your curtains, plant a ficus directly on a daybed, or randomly decide your cramped living room is twice as big as it really is.

More importantly, the furniture shown in the generated picture does not actually exist. The product grid on the right is populated by a separate computer vision model trained on Wayfair's catalog, trying its best to match the vibe of the generated image.

Free inspiration over paid subscriptions

AI interior restylers are popping up everywhere. Competitors like HomeDesigns AI charge at least $27 a month, while VisualizeAI also sits behind a paywall offering deeper controls like item exclusion and broader style lists.

Wayfair is giving Decorify away for free. Shrenik Sadalgi, Wayfair's R&D director, said the tool runs on an open-source model that the company plans to fine-tune with proprietary branding data. The goal is to produce exact 1:1 matches of real Wayfair products in future generations, and eventually let shoppers pick a list of items first before generating a room around them.

Why it matters

We think Decorify is a clever glimpse into the future of retail search, shifting commerce from boring keyword queries to generative discovery.

For shoppers, it is well worth playing with today because it costs nothing. If you are stuck on paint colors or furniture layouts, it delivers quick visual prompts in seconds, even if you should never trust its sense of spatial proportions for actual carpentry.

For the retail industry, it puts heavy pressure on standalone AI staging apps that charge monthly subscriptions. Why pay $27 to an independent tool when a giant retailer gives you comparable generative horsepower for free just to win your shopping cart?

That said, the experience currently risks frustrating buyers. When the AI conjures an impossibly gorgeous coffee table that Wayfair cannot actually ship, shoppers might bounce. Wayfair will need to deliver on that promised fine-tuning before Decorify turns from an amusing visual toy into a reliable sales engine.
