Upwork lands inside ChatGPT to hire freelancers directly

Published Reach 36

Upwork just rolled out a ChatGPT app that lets businesses describe project needs, draft job posts, and search through 18 million freelancers right inside the chat window. Once ready, users hop to Upwork's marketplace for contracts and compliance, backed by its AI agent Uma. It is another big step in OpenAI's push to turn ChatGPT into an all-in-one hub.

You just spent an hour brainstorming a brilliant product concept with ChatGPT, and now comes the annoying part: actually finding a human to build it. Upwork wants to remove that friction entirely.

On Thursday, freelance platform Upwork launched a dedicated app inside ChatGPT, letting businesses discover and hire talent directly within the chatbot interface without tab-hopping.

From prompt to payroll

The setup is straightforward. Users can describe their project requirements in plain language, and ChatGPT can instantly draft a tailored job description.

From there, the app taps directly into Upwork's network of 18 million freelancers to match relevant talent right in the chat. If you like someone, you can kick off the hiring process on the spot.

There is a boundary, though. Once you are ready to finalize things, you hop over to the Upwork Marketplace to handle legal compliance, contracts, and payments. Inside Upwork, users can also lean on Uma, Upwork's own AI agent, to take care of the more tedious operational tasks.

OpenAI's head of jobs and certification product, Chaya Nayak, noted that ChatGPT has already become the go-to place for teams to brainstorm ideas and move projects forward. This integration keeps that momentum going in a single thread.

Why it matters

With over 900 million weekly active users, ChatGPT is clearly evolving beyond a standard chatbot into an all-in-one operating system for knowledge work.

For solo founders and small business owners, this solves a real headache. Context-switching between brainstorming with an AI and drafting listings on hiring boards is clunky. Merging both steps saves time and preserves the exact context of what needs to be built.

We think Upwork played this very smartly. Instead of guarding its garden against AI, it treated ChatGPT as the ultimate top-of-funnel lead generator. By keeping payments, contracts, and compliance locked inside its own marketplace, Upwork catches fresh user intent at the source while protecting its core monetization engine.

It also sets a blueprint for other SaaS companies. When AI can draft the spec, the next logical step is executing the work, whether by agents or real people. Expect many more marketplace apps to show up directly inside the prompt box soon.
