Meta and Universal Music team up against unauthorized AI
Meta and Universal Music Group just expanded their global multi-year partnership, bringing licensed tracks to WhatsApp for the first time. Beyond monetization across short-form video, the deal focuses heavily on protecting human creators and teaming up to tackle unauthorized AI-generated music.

Meta and Universal Music Group just signed a massive new deal, and this time, generative AI is front and center.
The social media giant and UMG announced an expanded, multi-year global agreement covering Meta's entire platform roster: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and for the first time, WhatsApp.
While the financial terms remain private, the announcement takes a direct stance on AI. The companies explicitly stated that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to protect human creators and ensure fair compensation, promising to jointly address unauthorized AI-generated content affecting artists and songwriters.
The renewed tie-up also unlocks new commercial avenues, focusing heavily on short-form video monetization. Back in 2017, UMG became the very first major music company to license its recorded and publishing catalogs across Facebook.
Why it matters
For everyday users and short-form creators, this means UMG's deep catalog will safely remain on Instagram Reels, Stories, and now WhatsApp without sudden copyright takedowns or muted audio.
For the music industry, this partnership shows a shift in strategy. Instead of playing endless legal whack-a-mole against unauthorized AI tracks scattered across the web, rights holders are teaming up directly with the gatekeepers of digital distribution.
We think UMG is playing this smart by locking down protection at the platform level, and Meta secures peace of mind for its core engagement engines. The real question mark lies in execution. The companies have not shared specific technical details or definitions for what qualifies as unauthorized AI content, leaving open how aggressively Meta will enforce these boundaries without caught-in-the-crossfire fan edits.
