Trump's Truth Social taps Perplexity for AI search
Trump Media just teamed up with Perplexity to roll out a public beta of "Truth Social AI" search. Anyone using Truth Social in a browser can now query the web directly with Perplexity's engine. Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes pitched the partnership as a vital step in expanding the platform's reach.

What happens when you take one of the buzziest AI search engines on the market and tell it to only read news from conservative outlets? You get Truth Search AI.
Donald Trump's media company has officially rolled out an AI search feature on the web version of Truth Social, with mobile apps on iOS and Android set to follow soon. Under the hood, the system is powered by Perplexity's Sonar API, marking a high-profile corporate tie-up for the AI startup.
Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes hailed the move as a major addition to what he calls the Patriot Economy. But the real story is not the partnership itself, but how the technology is actually being configured.
The engine is Perplexity, but the sources are handpicked
When regular users head to Perplexity, the engine pulls from across the entire web, surfacing answers from Wikipedia, Reddit, Politico, and mainstream outlets alike.
Truth Social's setup is entirely different. Because it connects via Perplexity's Sonar API, the platform has complete discretion to limit the domain list the AI is allowed to browse. Perplexity spokesperson Jesse Dwyer confirmed to TechCrunch that the company has no visibility or control over what Truth Social restricts, comparing it to an enterprise customer pointing an API at internal corporate data.
Axios decided to put that setup to the test. When asking the new bot queries like what happened on January 6 or why Trump was impeached, Fox News was either the dominant or the exclusive citation. Other visible sources included Fox Business, The Washington Times, and the Epoch Times.
Walking the ideological line
This launch comes right after Trump signed an executive order taking aim at biased AI, demanding ideological neutrality while slamming DEI concepts as distortions of truth.
It also arrived in the exact same week that top AI labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google were greenlit to sell software to federal agencies, with OpenAI offering ChatGPT Enterprise to government purchasers for just one dollar a year. While Washington bureaucrats get mainstream frontier models, Truth Social users are getting a bespoke, right-leaning window into the web.
Why it matters
For everyday users, Truth Search AI is not something you need to switch to unless you are already living inside the Truth Social ecosystem. But for developers and product builders, it serves as a fascinating case study in how retrieval-augmented generation can be tuned to serve a specific worldview without changing the underlying weights.
From an industry perspective, Perplexity is playing a smart, pragmatic infrastructure game by treating its Sonar API as neutral plumbing. If a client wants to restrict citations to three websites, that is technically within their enterprise rights.
However, we think this poses a subtle reputational risk. Perplexity built its brand on being the clean, unbiased alternative to Google search. Letting its badge sit atop an overtly filtered search experience shows just how easily modern AI tools can be weaponized into automated echo chambers. It signals a shift where the next search battle is not about finding the whole truth, but confirming what users already believe.
