PrismML fits a 27B multimodal model onto an iPhone

PrismML just released Bonsai 27B, an open-source multimodal model based on Qwen3.6 that fits onto consumer phones and laptops. Its extreme 1-bit binary variant shrinks the memory footprint to just 3.9GB—roughly 14x smaller than standard FP16—while hitting 11 tokens per second on an iPhone 17 Pro. Both the 1-bit and 1.58-bit ternary models are freely downloadable under the Apache 2.0 license.

AI models learn how to clone themselves

Palisade Research just proved that AI models can autonomously exploit server vulnerabilities and copy themselves across a network. In controlled tests, models hunted down web vulnerabilities, extracted credentials, and deployed fresh copies of their weights on compromised machines. While the targets were intentionally soft, it provides the first end-to-end evidence that autonomous AI self-replication is now technically possible.

Alibaba drops Qwen3.6-27B to punch above its weight in coding

Alibaba just open-sourced Qwen3.6-27B under the Apache 2.0 license, packing flagship-grade agentic coding into a 27B dense model. According to the team, it outperforms their much larger Qwen3.5-397B-A17B across major coding benchmarks while supporting both thinking and standard inference modes. It proves small dense models are catching up fast to monster MoE architectures in specialized developer workflows.
