TIME launches conversational AI toolbar powered by ElevenLabs

Published Reach 33

TIME just launched TIME AI, an interactive tool built with ElevenLabs and Scale AI that turns static articles into a two-way voice conversation. Readers can ask follow-up questions directly to an audio agent equipped with article context and archives, essentially giving legacy journalism a personalized interactive guide.

Instead of just scrolling through longform articles or listening to a robotic text-to-speech voice, you can now literally talk back to the news.

TIME just rolled out TIME AI, an interactive toolbar that brings conversational voice and AI features directly into its reporting. Readers can access audio, translation, instant summaries, and a voice agent they can chat with in real time.

Conversational journalism you can interrupt

Under the hood, the feature is powered by a duo of AI heavyweights. ElevenLabs provides the low-latency Conversational AI engine, which sounds surprisingly human and naturally handles when a listener interrupts mid-sentence.

Scale AI handled the data and safety side. It hooked TIME's massive proprietary archives and current event data into a pipeline of prompt engineering, retrieval, fine-tuning, and guardrails to ensure the voice agent stays strictly on-topic.

Readers can ask specific context questions, such as why a specific figure was picked as Person of the Year, what year Tesla went public, or how many tickets Taylor Swift sold in 2023. The tool is live right now on TIME's Person of the Year features for 2021 through 2024.

Why it matters

While most legacy publishers are busy suing AI companies or signing backroom licensing deals, TIME is actually putting generative voice tech front and center to rethink how people consume journalism.

For readers, it transforms static archive reading into a dynamic, 1-on-1 briefing. Instead of switching tabs to Google a piece of background trivia, you can just ask the story itself.

We think this is one of the smartest uses of voice agents we have seen so far, but the margin for error is razor-thin. Journalism relies entirely on trust. Even with Scale AI's guardrails in place, if the bot hallucinates a key historical fact in a trusted publication, it is TIME's editorial reputation on the line.
