TikTok is testing built-in AI avatars

TikTok is experimenting with a new tool that generates stylized AI profile pictures directly inside the app. Similar to Lensa, users can upload 3 to 10 photos and pick a few art styles to get custom avatars for their profile or stories. TikTok confirmed the tool is currently in testing across select regions.

Remember when Prisma Labs’ Lensa blew up and everyone’s timeline turned into an AI art gallery practically overnight? TikTok apparently took notes.

Social media consultant Matt Navarra just leaked images and videos showing that TikTok is actively testing an in-app generative AI avatar tool. Instead of sending users to a third-party app, TikTok wants to let you build those stylized digital portraits right where you scroll.

TikTok spokesperson Zachary Kizer confirmed the project, calling it an experiment currently available to users in select regions.

How the avatar builder works

The workflow feels very familiar to anyone who has played with custom avatar generators. The tool asks you to upload between three and ten photos of yourself so it can learn your facial features.

From there, you choose between two and five different artistic styles. After submitting, the system takes some processing time to generate your portraits.

Once the images are ready, you can download them directly to your device, set your favorite as your TikTok profile picture, or share it immediately to your TikTok Story. The examples Navarra shared covered a wide variety of looks, from illustrated portraits to stylized digital art.

Why it matters

We think this is a textbook example of a super-app absorbing a standalone trend, and it could spell trouble for single-feature AI wrappers.

For regular users, the value is pure convenience. When Lensa was everywhere, people downloaded a separate app and often paid a paywall just to get a handful of cool portraits. Baking that capability directly into TikTok removes the friction entirely. You upload a few selfies, pick a style, and your new profile picture is ready without leaving your feed.

For the AI landscape, it illustrates how fragile feature-only apps really are. Lensa proved massive consumer demand for personalized digital avatars, but TikTok has the distribution muscle. Once platforms integrate these tools natively, few people will bother downloading an external app to do the exact same thing.

The smart part of TikTok’s approach is the built-in viral loop. An AI portrait is fundamentally designed to be shown off. Every time someone sets one as their avatar or posts it to their Story, they are actively advertising the feature to their followers.

That said, the challenge will be compute and privacy. Processing multiple photos to output high-resolution stylized portraits requires serious computing power, which explains why generation takes time. Handling sensitive biometric facial data at TikTok's scale will also inevitably draw intense scrutiny from regulators and privacy advocates.
