Tether built a crypto wallet kit for AI agents

Published Reach 40

Tether just launched an open-source Wallet Development Kit (WDK) that lets developers embed non-custodial USDT and Bitcoin wallets into any app or device. Notably, it is explicitly built to support autonomous AI agents and robots alongside humans, giving software systems full control of their own crypto without third-party custody.

Tether's new open-source Wallet Development Kit (WDK) is a modular library designed to let developers embed non-custodial crypto wallets directly into any website, app, or hardware device.

The standout detail: it is built not just for human users, but explicitly to empower autonomous AI agents, robots, and automated software systems to hold and spend money on their own.

What it does

Usually, integrating crypto payments into an app means either building complex private-key infrastructure from scratch or relying on third-party custodians.

Third-party custody is convenient, but it means handing asset control over to intermediaries.

WDK takes a strictly non-custodial approach. It provides a modular, battle-tested code library that leaves complete control of private keys and funds directly in the hands of the end user or software agent.

Tether claims the setup process has been stripped down to essentials, allowing developers to plug self-hosted wallet functionality into existing platforms with minimal friction.

From IoT chips to AI brains

According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, WDK is built to be ultra-modular, scalable, and cross-platform.

It is engineered to run virtually anywhere—from embedded IoT hardware and smartphones to laptop desktop apps and web browsers.

More importantly, Ardoino noted it is ready to be embedded directly into autonomous AI systems and robotic brains, enabling software agents to execute transactions natively.

At launch, WDK supports Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT). Tether also plans to roll out complete, ready-to-use UI templates across platforms so developers can quickly build out full non-custodial user experiences.

Why it matters

If you are building autonomous AI agents, automated trading workflows, or embedded hardware that needs to handle microtransactions, WDK is worth a look. Giving autonomous software direct custody over native crypto assets without relying on custodial APIs solves a huge headache for agentic workflows.

Tether already commands over $124 billion in circulating USDT and dominates roughly 68% of the stablecoin market. By shipping an open-source development kit, Tether is not trying to lock users into a closed ecosystem; instead, it is positioning USDT and Bitcoin to become the default rails for machine-to-machine commerce as AI agents take over more economic activity.
