Tencent Yuanbao turns your selfies into printable 3D avatars

Published Reach 36

Tencent Yuanbao just rolled out a "3D Avatar Dream Factory" feature that generates customizable 3D characters from a single front-facing selfie. The tool offers 10 different styles with PBR material mapping and full 360-degree viewing, and users can even take their virtual models to an offline 3D printer to make real figurines.

Turning yourself into a realistic 3D model used to require sitting inside an expensive rig surrounded by dozens of DSLR cameras, followed by days of manual digital cleanup.

Tencent wants to shrink that entire studio down to a single smartphone tap. The tech giant just rolled out a new feature called 3D Avatar Dream Factory inside its Tencent Yuanbao AI app and WeChat mini-program.

Users can upload a single front-facing photo and instantly generate a fully customized 3D avatar that can be rotated in 360 degrees.

From a single selfie to a 3D print

Generating volumetric geometry from a flat 2D picture has historically been a massive headache for computer vision. Yuanbao tackles this by combining 3D head swapping, geometric sculpting, and PBR material texture mapping.

Instead of wrapping a flat texture around a generic sphere, the AI sculpts facial contours and applies physically based rendering textures to keep skin, lighting, and hair looking sharp from all angles.

The feature launches with 10 different character styles to choose from. Once the avatar is generated, users can inspect it from any perspective, tweak the details, share it, or export the asset for offline 3D printing.

The whole setup is powered by Tencent's proprietary Yuanbao large model, which already handles multimodal inputs and has been tuned on Tencent's internal 3D asset generation pipelines.

Why it matters

We think this is a smart move that turns high-friction 3D production into a casual consumer toy. For ordinary users, the barrier to entry has evaporated: no knowledge of polygons or UV mapping required, just a front-facing selfie that can yield a printable figurine file. If you own a hobbyist 3D printer or want a custom desk ornament, it is worth a spin.

For the broader industry, this shows that frontier multimodal battles are steadily moving beyond text, audio, and video into native 3D assets. Tencent has the world's largest gaming ecosystem and massive social networks, making 3D generation a natural strategic fit for virtual identities and physical merchandise pipelines.

That said, single-image 3D generation is fundamentally prone to edge-case hallucinations. If a photo has harsh lighting, glasses, or unusual hairstyles, the back and side profiles can easily morph into uncanny-valley territory. Ten preset styles are fun for an afternoon, but unless Tencent gives creators deeper customization controls or links directly to print-on-demand hardware vendors, it risks becoming another one-off novelty filter.
