Tencent drops Hunyuan-TurboS: a Mamba-Transformer hybrid at 1/7th the cost
Tencent Hunyuan just unveiled Hunyuan-TurboS, an ultra-large MoE model blending Transformer and Mamba architectures to ease long-context training and KV-cache overhead. The team claims it tops GPT-4o and DeepSeek-V3 in math and reasoning, all while cutting inference costs to one-seventh of its predecessor.

Running ultra-long context on pure Transformers has always been an expensive headache. Tencent Hunyuan just unveiled Hunyuan-TurboS, pitching it as the first ultra-large model combining a Hybrid-Transformer-Mamba architecture with Mixture of Experts.
The goal is simple: marry Mamba's linear efficiency in long sequences with Transformer's deep contextual understanding, tackling the dreaded quadratic complexity and massive KV-cache bottlenecks.
Slashing inference costs to a seventh
According to Tencent's benchmark claims, TurboS outscores GPT-4o-0806 and DeepSeek-V3 across math, reasoning, and alignment, while holding its ground on knowledge tests like MMLU-Pro.
The real headline, however, is operational efficiency. Tencent says the new model cuts inference costs to just one-seventh of its previous Turbo version.
On the post-training side, Hunyuan integrated slow-thinking capabilities to sharpen coding and math reasoning, alongside refined instruction tuning and English optimization. The upgraded reward stack also relies on code sandbox execution and generative reward modeling to curb reward hacking.
Why it matters
Most frontier labs are still trying to brute-force long context inside pure Transformers, but this release shows the race is rapidly shifting toward architecture-level cost compression.
For developers running agentic loops or heavy document workloads, an architectural shift that slashes serving costs by over 80% without sacrificing reasoning is exactly what production AI needs.
That said, high benchmark scores on curated datasets do not always guarantee rock-solid retrieval in messy, production-grade documents. Developers will want to see independent evaluations verify its hybrid stability before completely ditching standard models.
