Tavus drops sub-second conversational video avatars for developers

Published Reach 38

Tavus just launched its Conversational Video Interface, enabling developers to build digital twins that can see, hear, and talk in real time with under one second of latency. The setup is fully white-labeled and modular, letting developers swap out their own LLM and TTS components. It basically brings ultra-low-latency, face-to-face video AI agents to any app.

Talking to an AI video avatar usually feels like a bad overseas phone call with awkward pauses.

Tavus announced what it calls the world's fastest Conversational Video Interface for developers. The new tool allows teams to build real-time video experiences featuring digital twins that can see, hear, and speak.

Sub-second latency for video twins

The headline spec here is speed. Tavus claims the interface operates with less than one second of latency, bringing digital human responses much closer to natural conversational rhythm.

For developers, the offering is built to be plug-and-play and fully white-labeled. The stack is modular, meaning teams can swap out core components like the underlying LLM or the text-to-speech engine to fit their own pipeline. Tavus also launched a live demo featuring a digital twin named Carter to show off the system in real time.

Why it matters

We think packaging this technology as a white-labeled, modular API is the right move.

Building low-latency video avatars from scratch is notoriously hard, requiring complex orchestration across audio streaming, real-time rendering, and language models. By bringing latency under a second and letting companies customize the LLM and voice, Tavus makes interactive video agents viable for high-touch use cases like customer support, interactive tutoring, and virtual sales.

The real test, in our view, will be consistency. Maintaining sub-second latency across diverse network conditions while keeping lip-sync natural is tough, but lowering the technical barrier this much will push the entire video agent space forward.
