AI makes Lionel Messi speak fluent English
Synthesia just used five minutes of video footage to create a hyper-realistic synthetic video of soccer legend Lionel Messi speaking fluent English and up to 10 other languages. Messi rarely speaks English in public, and fans pointed out that the lip-sync was eerily convincing. Why it matters: Deep learning video tools are turning cross-lingual video dubbing into a turnkey reality.

Football fans around the world know that Lionel Messi lets his boots do the talking. Off the pitch, the Argentine legend sticks almost exclusively to Spanish, with Goal previously noting that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is widely assumed not to speak English at all.
Even Messi himself admitted to Guillem Balague back in 2021 that while he had been learning English for a year and a half, he could only understand it, not speak it.
That makes a recent viral clip of Messi chatting in fluent English feel like a genuine glitch in the matrix.
A 5-minute clip builds a synthetic superstar
AI video generation platform Synthesia took just five minutes of existing footage of the Argentina captain and ran it through its deep learning algorithms.
Synthesia basically created a full synthetic representation of Messi, capable of delivering natural-sounding dialogue in up to 10 different languages, including fluent English.
Fan reactions rolled in fast and split right down the middle. Some were genuinely thrilled, praising how cool it felt to hear Messi speak English and pointing out how frighteningly realistic his lip-sync was.
Others found it deeply unsettling. One fan commented that after playing like an alien, Messi now sounds like a robot. Another warned that we are rapidly reaching a point where telling reality from synthetic media will be nearly impossible.
Why it matters
We think this demo highlights just how shockingly low the barrier to high-end video cloning has dropped.
You no longer need hours of specialized studio motion capture or multi-million-dollar CGI budgets. With just five minutes of standard broadcast footage, an AI engine can puppet one of the most recognizable humans on Earth across ten languages with accurate mouth movements.
For sports marketing, global brands, and international creators, the commercial upside is massive. Athletes and celebrities can instantly localize product launches and global campaigns without stepping into a studio or learning a word of the target language.
However, the warning signs are just as glaring. When an iconic public figure can be rendered saying full sentences convincingly in languages they do not actually speak, authenticating video evidence becomes an uphill battle. If fans are already struggling to separate synthetic footage from reality today, digital identity rights and deepfake verification are about to become a massive headache for the entire industry.
