A Cursor-style AI editor for 3D CAD modeling
SynapsCAD just launched an open-source tool aiming to become the Cursor for CAD. Developers write OpenSCAD code on the left and see real-time 3D geometry on the right, with the ability to click any part in the viewport to have AI modify the underlying code. Why it matters: Unlike black-box generative 3D meshes, every AI change remains clean, version-controlled code.

What it does and how it works
SynapsCAD is an open-source editor for OpenSCAD that aims to do for 3D modeling what Cursor did for coding.
The layout puts an OpenSCAD code editor on the left, an interactive 3D viewport on the right, and an AI chat assistant alongside them. The highlight is viewport interaction: click any part of the 3D model, and the AI automatically picks up the part tag and selection context to modify the underlying code according to your prompt.
Under the hood, it avoids black-box generative geometry. Clicking Compile runs the script through scad-rs for parsing, an internal AST walker for evaluation, and csgrs for CSG boolean mesh generation. Camera navigation mirrors Blender conventions, and exports cover native STL and OBJ, alongside multi-color 3MF files powered by lib3mf.
Why it matters
Most generative 3D tools produce messy polygonal meshes that are almost impossible to tweak with engineering precision. SynapsCAD keeps code as the single source of truth. Every edit remains human-readable, parametric, and easy to track in version control.
If you work with OpenSCAD or design parts for 3D printing, it is well worth exploring. Feeding visual viewport selections directly into an AI coding assistant is a practical, clever approach to computer-aided design.
