How to ditch ChatGPT and migrate your data to Claude

Published Reach 41

Claude just surged to the top of the US App Store as users flee ChatGPT following OpenAI's controversial Pentagon deal. TechCrunch broke down how to take your digital history with you, explaining how to export your ChatGPT memories and conversation logs to train Claude's built-in memory feature without starting from scratch.

Breaking up with your primary AI chatbot used to feel like switching phone operating systems. The friction of losing years of digital memory kept most people locked in.

That inertia just broke.

The Pentagon deal that backfired

Anthropic drew a hard line last week, refusing to allow the Department of Defense to use its models for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.

The White House retaliated fast. President Trump ordered all federal agencies to immediately purge Anthropic software, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signaled plans to designate the startup a supply-chain threat.

Hours later, OpenAI swooped in and signed its own deal with the Pentagon. Even though OpenAI claimed the agreement includes strict ethical safeguards, the move triggered an instant public backlash over surveillance and military AI.

The consumer response was swift. Claude rocketed to the top of Apple's U.S. App Store free charts, leapfrogging ChatGPT.

Anthropic says daily sign-ups have reached record highs. Free users are up over 60% since January, and paid subscribers have more than doubled so far this year.

How to migrate your AI brain

If you are planning to make the jump, you do not have to train a new assistant from scratch.

Start by grabbing your ChatGPT memory. Head to Settings, select Personalization, and manage your stored memories. Copy the profile notes that accurately reflect how you work.

If you want everything, go to Data Controls and export your full chat archive. ChatGPT will email you a downloadable file, though large accounts might take some time to process.

Over on Claude, make sure the Memory feature is enabled under Settings and Capabilities. Anthropic recently made this feature available to free users as well as paid subscribers.

Here is the key trick: do not paste massive raw logs into Claude. Instead, ask Claude to analyze your exported text, extract your key preferences, and store that distilled summary into its memory.

If you want a clean break from OpenAI, canceling your subscription is not enough. Wipe your stored memories first, drop a chat command asking to delete personalized data, and then permanently delete the account under your settings.

Why it matters

For everyday users, this migration playbook proves that model lock-in is mostly an illusion. Transferring your digital preferences between competing frontiers takes less than ten minutes, which lowers the barrier to switching whenever a provider crosses a line.

For the AI landscape, this is a rare moment where ethical positioning directly translates into massive consumer acquisition. OpenAI gained a lucrative defense contract, but it handed Anthropic the ultimate brand differentiator: being the company that said no.

We think Anthropic played this brilliantly in the consumer arena, transforming a regulatory penalty into the most effective marketing campaign of the year.

The real risk lies in the enterprise sector. Getting branded as a supply-chain threat by the federal government could choke off Anthropic's enterprise pipeline if corporate compliance teams get spooked. OpenAI took the reputational punch, but its deep government integration ensures massive capital and compute pipelines down the road.
