Ilya Sutskever's SSI in talks for $20B valuation
Safe Superintelligence, the AI startup founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, is reportedly in talks to raise funding at a valuation of at least $20 billion. The pre-revenue startup was valued at $5 billion just last September, quadrupling its valuation as investor hype around top frontier AI researchers shows no signs of slowing down.

Zero revenue, 4x valuation
Ilya Sutskever’s AI startup, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), is in talks to raise fresh capital at a valuation of "at least" $20 billion, according to Reuters.
That would quadruple the $5 billion valuation the company fetched just last September. SSI currently generates zero revenue, and while the exact funding target is unclear, the round is expected to be massive.
Co-founded alongside former OpenAI researcher Daniel Levy and ex-Apple AI projects lead Daniel Gross, SSI has already raised $1 billion from heavyweight backers including Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and DST Global. Outside of its high-profile mission, almost nothing is known publicly about what the team is actually building.
Why it matters
A $20 billion valuation with zero revenue and zero shipping products is practically unheard of, but Sutskever is not an ordinary founder. As the technical brain behind the breakthroughs that made ChatGPT possible, venture capitalists are essentially writing blank checks on his research intuition alone.
It also highlights how absurdly capital-intensive frontier AI has become. Building pure-play superintelligence without near-term commercial distractions demands enormous compute war chests, effectively turning AGI research into an ultra-exclusive club where scientific reputation commands tens of billions in pure faith.
