Stripe buys AI model router OpenRouter for $7.5B
Stripe just confirmed it's acquiring AI model routing startup OpenRouter for a reported $7.5 billion, a massive jump from its $1.3 billion valuation in May. OpenRouter connects 8 million developers to over 400 AI models. Why it matters: Beyond processing payments, Stripe is buying a front-row seat to AI token spending and developer demand.

Why would the world’s biggest payments processor spend billions on a startup that routes prompts between AI models?
Stripe has confirmed a deal to acquire AI model router OpenRouter. While the purchase price was not officially disclosed, sources told The New York Times that Stripe paid a staggering $7.5 billion.
That marks a wild leap from OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation just three months ago in May. The startup's founders will reportedly pocket $1.5 billion alone, with investors taking the remaining $6 billion. Stripe reportedly had to outbid heavyweight rivals, including Databricks, to seal the deal.
Owning the token tap
Founded in 2023 by OpenSea co-founder Alex Atallah, OpenRouter has quietly become essential developer plumbing. It connects over 8 million developers to more than 400 AI models, automatically routing requests to the cheapest and fastest option.
In a leaked letter to investors, Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison joked that they made the purchase because "January 1 marked the beginning of the singularity."
Hyperbole aside, the business logic is dead serious. Stripe notes that 88% of the Forbes AI 50 use its payments rails, including OpenAI and Anthropic. The developer overlap between the two platforms is massive.
Historically, Stripe’s big moves focused on revenue collection. Buying OpenRouter puts Stripe directly on the opposite side of the ledger: managing token expenses.
OpenRouter said in a blog post that it will continue operating independently after the deal closes, with its product and mission remaining intact.
Why it matters
For developers, nothing changes immediately, but the long-term utility is huge. Merging incoming user subscription revenue with outgoing model API costs under one Stripe umbrella could solve a massive accounting headache for AI-native software builders.
We think this is one of the smartest, most aggressive strategic plays of the AI era. Everyone from Databricks to Ramp and Rippling is trying to build AI gateways and spend tracking tools. Instead of building from scratch, Stripe simply bought the default home for developer model routing.
More importantly, this gives Stripe unprecedented leverage over the entire AI supply chain. By sitting in front of 8 million developers, Stripe controls where the prompt traffic goes. That gives it serious bargaining power over frontier labs like OpenAI and the hyperscalers hosting them. The only real risk is whether OpenRouter can maintain its developer trust and strict neutrality under corporate ownership.
