Stability AI wants a $4B valuation
Stability AI is reportedly in talks to raise new capital at a valuation of around $4 billion, according to Bloomberg. The startup behind Stable Diffusion reached unicorn status just months ago after a $101 million round. While final terms could still change, the huge leap underscores soaring investor appetite for generative AI.

While the rest of the tech world is busy cutting costs and tightening belts, generative AI is moving on an entirely different timeline.
Stability AI, the London-based startup behind the runaway hit image generator Stable Diffusion, is in talks with investors to raise fresh capital at a valuation of around $4 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. The exact amount the company plans to raise is still unclear, and sources noted that final decisions have not been made and terms could still change. Stability AI declined to comment.
Quadrupling in months
If the deal goes through anywhere near that number, it marks an astonishing climb for a company that officially became a unicorn only last fall.
Back in October, Stability AI closed a $101 million funding round that valued the startup at roughly $1 billion, backed by heavyweight investors including Coatue Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Heading back to market just months later looking for four times that valuation shows just how aggressively capital is rushing toward generative AI amid a broader venture downturn.
Meanwhile, the competitive pressure is mounting from every corner of Big Tech.
Microsoft recently sealed a $10 billion investment in OpenAI, whose DALL-E 2 tool directly rivals Stable Diffusion. The gold rush is moving so fast that LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman just announced he is stepping down from OpenAI's board, specifically because his venture firm is backing other AI startups and wants to avoid conflicts of interest. Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta are all racing to establish their own front-runners.
Stability’s counterweight has always been its open-source ethos. Anyone with a capable GPU can download and run Stable Diffusion locally to generate visuals ranging from video game assets to ad creatives without paying per-image platform fees.
Why it matters
We think this $4 billion price tag is less about Stability AI's current balance sheet and more about the price of keeping AI open.
For digital artists, indie game studios, and developers, Stable Diffusion has been a lifeline against closed corporate APIs. It allows for local deployment, community fine-tuning, and absolute creative control. Another massive cash injection would ensure that open-source model development keeps pace with trillion-dollar tech giants.
However, we believe the business model remains the elephant in the room. Unlike OpenAI, which monetizes compute through API calls and paid tiers, open-sourcing your primary asset makes recouping massive cloud compute costs extraordinarily difficult.
If Stability secures this round, it will prove that investors are willing to fund foundational open infrastructure at any cost. But if it struggles to show real enterprise revenue soon, that quadrupled valuation could quickly become an anchor.
