Stability AI open-sources DreamStudio as StableStudio

Published Reach 68

Stability AI just open-sourced the frontend behind DreamStudio, launching it as a community-driven project called StableStudio. The move hands the keys of its primary image generation interface over to external devs, with roadmaps for WebGPU local inference, plugins, and an upcoming chat tool. Stability will keep DreamStudio alive as a hosted implementation of the codebase.

StableStudio is the open-source web frontend behind Stability AI's flagship image generation tool, DreamStudio. It gives you a clean, functional browser UI to prompt, render, and edit images, with full control over where those requests actually go.

What you can do with it

DreamStudio was built as the primary consumer sandbox for Stable Diffusion and SDXL. StableStudio packages that exact UI for anyone to self-host and customize, stripped clean of proprietary branding.

The biggest technical upgrade is the plugin architecture. In DreamStudio, backend calls were hardcoded to Stability's proprietary API. In StableStudio, every backend request is handled through plugins. If you can write a little TypeScript, you can redirect the frontend to communicate with any generative backend, including third-party hosted APIs or local machines.

Account logins and billing controls have also been stripped out. The hosted DreamStudio web app will stick around for managed accounts, but StableStudio exists purely as an unbundled, developer-friendly interface.

Stability AI has laid out an ambitious roadmap for the repo. The team plans to add its upcoming chat interface directly into the project, alongside browser-based local inference using WebGPU, an integration for stable-diffusion-webui, a standalone desktop app, and native ControlNet tooling. Bounties are also planned for community contributors tackling new features.

Getting it running

Getting a local instance up takes only a couple of terminal commands, provided you already have Node.js and Yarn installed.

You clone the Stability-AI/StableStudio repository from GitHub, navigate into the directory, and run yarn followed by yarn dev. The app spins up locally at localhost:3000.

Out of the box, the project defaults to the Stability API plugin, meaning you will need an active API key with credits to generate pictures right away. Alternatively, you can start building or swapping in custom backend plugins immediately.

Everything is available in the public GitHub repo, including UI components, documentation, and the plugin development template.

Why it matters

For creators and developers frustrated by the cluttered, utility-first look of stable-diffusion-webui, StableStudio provides a slick, modern alternative that feels like a polished commercial app. It is an ideal starting canvas if you want to build a white-label image generator for your team or clients.

That said, right out of the gate, it remains mostly a frontend shell tethered to paid Stability API calls. Until the WebGPU and local webui connectors land, everyday users without coding skills will not see much immediate benefit over the hosted version. Front-end tinkerers and plugin builders, however, should dive in right away.
