Stability AI buys Clipdrop maker Init ML

Published Reach 41

Stability AI just made its first-ever acquisition, buying Init ML, the team behind the popular image-editing suite Clipdrop. With over 15 million users already on board, Init ML will operate as an independent subsidiary, integrating Stability’s latest open-source generative models directly into Clipdrop’s everyday creative apps.

Open-source AI powerhouses have a notorious blind spot: turning raw model weights into slick, everyday software that your non-technical friends can actually use.

Stability AI just took a major step toward fixing that. The company announced its very first acquisition, buying Paris-based Init ML, the creators behind the wildly popular imaging suite Clipdrop.

Buying an instant audience of 15 million

If you have ever needed to yank a background from a photo or upscale a fuzzy graphic, you have probably crossed paths with Clipdrop.

Founded in July 2020 with seed backing from Air Street Capital, Init ML built Clipdrop into a creator favorite with over 15 million users. Along the way, the app grabbed six Product Hunt Product of the Day awards and snagged a 2020 Golden Kitty Award for AR.

Part of its magic is that it is everywhere. Clipdrop runs across iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, the web, and even lives inside Adobe Photoshop as a plugin. It had already been quietly testing Stability AI's generative models in beta.

Under the terms of the deal, Init ML will operate as a wholly owned, independent subsidiary. The entire team is staying put. CEO Cyril Diagne becomes VP of Innovation, COO Damien Henry steps in as Senior VP of Product, and CTO Jonathan Blanchet takes over as VP of Engineering.

Stability AI founder and CEO Emad Mostaque noted that the acquisition gives Clipdrop the compute muscle and research pipeline needed to roll out next-generation multimodal imaging tools.

Why it matters

Building great foundational models is hard, but crafting an intuitive consumer front-end with millions of loyal users is arguably harder. Midjourney conquered Discord, and OpenAI has ChatGPT. Until now, Stability AI relied heavily on the open-source community to build interfaces around Stable Diffusion.

For everyday creators, this is fantastic news. You get Stability's cutting-edge generative technology baked straight into native apps and Photoshop plugins without touching a line of code or wrestling with local hardware setups. If you do visual work, Clipdrop is well worth a spin right now.

Strategically, we think this is a brilliant shortcut for Stability AI. Buying a battle-tested product with 15 million active creators instantly solves their distribution problem.

That said, the move brings obvious friction. Running compute-heavy generative models across a massive user base is wildly expensive, and Stability AI is already burning serious cash on research and servers. Monetizing these apps effectively without alienating the existing user base looks like their next big hurdle.
