Snapchat gives Plus subscribers AI image generation and photo expansion
Snapchat just rolled out a batch of generative AI perks for its $3.99/month Plus subscribers, letting them generate and send images directly from text prompts. The update also adds an AI photo extend feature that fills in backgrounds, alongside co-op Dreams selfies with friends. It is another push to monetize generative tools inside casual chat.

Snapchat is adding another layer of generative AI to its ephemeral messaging, and this time it wants to fill in the blanks of what your camera missed.
The company launched a fresh suite of generative AI features exclusively for Snapchat Plus subscribers, giving paid users the ability to create AI images from text prompts and magically extend existing photos.
Typing prompts directly into the camera
For users paying the $3.99 monthly subscription fee, the camera screen now features a dedicated AI button on the right-hand toolbar. Tapping it opens a prompt bar where you can type whatever you want to see, or select from built-in suggestions like "a futuristic disco" or "a rocket preparing for liftoff."
Once the AI generates the visual, you can tweak it, add captions, and fire it off to friends just like a standard Snap.
Alongside text-to-image generation, Snapchat is also rolling out an AI outpainting feature. If you snap a tight close-up, hitting the crop icon and selecting "extend" lets the AI fill in the missing background, pulling the camera back from the subject.
Subscribers are also getting an upgrade to "Dreams," Snapchat's thematic AI selfie tool, which now supports generating themed pictures with friends. Plus members continue to get one free pack of eight Dreams each month.
The update caps a busy year of AI rollouts for Snap, following the wide release of its My AI chatbot in April and a recent update letting lens developers build filters powered by ChatGPT.
Why it matters
Snap is showing the rest of the industry how to monetize consumer AI without making it feel like work. Instead of pitching sophisticated creative suites or enterprise assistants, it takes tools like outpainting and prompt generation and turns them into quick, playful conversation starters.
At $3.99 a month, it gives casual users a reason to open their wallets without needing to learn prompt engineering or pay heavy software subscriptions. The feature set also strengthens the value proposition of Snapchat Plus, proving that social apps can successfully package AI perks as premium memberships rather than burning GPU costs for free.
The real test will be whether this changes the soul of the platform. Snapchat built its empire on raw, authentic, vanishing moments between close friends. Flooding the chat feed with synthetic images and fabricated backdrops risks watering down that authenticity, but for now, it makes paid chatting feel a whole lot more entertaining.
