Shopify's AI agent builds your entire store

Published Reach 55

Shopify just rolled out Canvas, a visual workspace powered by its AI agent, Sidekick. Instead of wrestling with theme code or static panels, merchants can pan across all pages at once, zoom into details, and chat with Sidekick to edit live code in real time. Sidekick even reviews screenshots of its own work to refine layouts. Why it matters: It turns bespoke storefront design from a multi-week coding slog into an interactive creative session.

Shopify just launched Canvas, a visual workspace that lets merchants build and redesign their entire online store by chatting with Sidekick, the company's AI agent.

Instead of hunting through nested theme settings or hiring a freelance developer to tweak liquid files, merchants can now see all their store pages laid out together on an infinite board. You can pan out to judge the overall aesthetic of the brand across multiple pages, or zoom in close to fine-tune a single button.

Crucially, Shopify says Canvas is not showing a static mockup. It renders real store code in real time, so merchants can test animations, click through interactive components, and see how pages adapt across different screen sizes while chatting with the AI.

Sidekick does not just spit out text either. Under the hood, Shopify gave the agent direct access to theme files and built a visual feedback loop: Sidekick inspects screenshots of its own work as it codes, fixing mistakes before presenting changes to the merchant. According to Shopify, Sidekick already made over 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026 alone.

There are clear early limits. Canvas is desktop-only, rolling out gradually over the coming days, and does not replace Shopify's existing editor yet. According to TechCrunch, the initial release lacks support for third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, international markets, translations, and theme updates, all of which Shopify plans to tackle later.

Why it matters

We think Canvas is a remarkably smart adaptation of the vibe-coding wave sweeping software design. While general-purpose tools like Lovable, Replit, and Framer let anyone generate websites from scratch, Shopify has the home-court advantage of strict e-commerce guardrails. By forcing Sidekick to follow curated design contracts and evaluate its own live screenshots, it prevents the hallucinated UI garbage that usually plagues AI-written layouts.

For solo founders and small brands who cannot afford dedicated agencies, this dramatically lowers the cost of a bespoke look. Going from a two-week coding slog to a 20-minute chat session is genuinely transformative if you just want to test a seasonal campaign or spin up a new product drop.

The friction, however, will be Shopify's massive partner ecosystem. By launching without third-party theme and app extension support, Shopify is initially walling off its most loyal developer base. If Canvas remains too isolated from the apps merchants rely on to actually run their businesses, it risks being a gorgeous prototyping sandbox rather than a true production powerhouse.
