Runway launches 'Watch' feed to showcase AI films

Runway just launched "Watch" on its website and iOS app, giving creators a dedicated hub to share and stream longer-form AI-generated videos. Amid ongoing Hollywood strikes over generative AI, CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela argued that the debate needs more nuance, positioning the feed as evidence that AI augments filmmakers rather than replacing them.

Hollywood is currently grinding through massive strikes over the threat of artificial intelligence, but gen-AI video leader Runway isn't blinking. Fresh off a $141 million funding round from Google, Nvidia, and Salesforce that pushed its valuation to $1.5 billion, the startup just launched a brand new feature called Watch across its website and iOS app.

Watch is basically Runway's own native screening room, built specifically for users to publish and stream longer-form video projects made with its creative suite.

From vintage typewriters to Tribeca

Speaking from Runway’s low-key Manhattan headquarters in Tribeca, CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela pushed back on the picket line panic. He says the debate around AI in entertainment needs way more nuance, stressing that when talking directly with actual filmmakers, AI acts as an augment to their craft rather than an outright replacement.

Valenzuela's obsession with text-to-video actually stretches back long before the transformer boom. In 2012, he created an art installation in Chile called Regression, wiring his grandfather's vintage typewriter to software that projected matching video clips with every keystroke. Six years later, while at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he co-founded Runway to turn digital toolmaking into creative software.

The launch of Watch follows an accelerating community wave. In March, Runway held its first annual AI Film Festival. By June, creator Nicolas Neubert went viral with Genesis, a hyper-cinematic 45-second sci-fi trailer generated with Gen-2 that racked up millions of views and mainstream press.

Why it matters

For indie creators, Watch is a great new venue. Instead of fighting algorithms on YouTube or X to show off complex AI workflows, filmmakers now have a targeted showcase to study prompt pacing, camera motion, and visual consistency directly from top community projects. If you are experimenting with generative video, browsing this feed is well worth your time.

Strategically, Runway is playing a clever game. Instead of waiting for Hollywood studios to settle disputes or warm up to external tech, Runway is bypassing legacy pipelines entirely to build its own end-to-end creative ecosystem. By combining production tools with an in-house distribution feed, it secures user engagement and sets itself apart from pure-play model providers that only offer an API.

That said, we think the platform faces a clear artistic challenge. Today's AI video tools excel at moody, fast-cut sci-fi teasers, but struggle deeply with sustained character consistency, emotional depth, and intricate dialogue over longer durations. If Watch ends up filled with repetitive, empty eye-candy montages, audiences will tire quickly. Runway has built the cinema; now its creators actually have to make movies people want to sit through.
