Runway builds a skunkworks for world model apps
Runway just launched Runway Labs, an internal incubator dedicated to developing experimental applications powered by generative video and General World Models. Led by co-founder Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, the team will prototype tools across Hollywood, gaming, healthcare, and education. It signals Runway's push to move past basic text-to-video prompts and turn world models into commercial software platforms.

If you think AI video is only meant for Hollywood creatives and social media clips, Runway is already looking way past that.
Runway just launched Runway Labs, an internal incubator focused on building next-generation applications around generative video and General World Models. The new unit will be led by co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Alejandro Matamala Ortiz.
Beyond video editing
Runway believes AI video is at an inflection point. Instead of sticking strictly to creative tooling, Runway Labs plans to aggressively prototype experimental products across entirely different fields.
That list includes film, healthcare, education, gaming, advertising, sports, retail, real estate, and professional training. To make this happen, Runway is actively hiring design engineers, ML engineers, full stack engineers, and ex-founders.
Why it matters
For builders and founders, this signals that video models are ready to leave the studio and enter real-world workflows. If you have deep domain knowledge in spaces like healthcare or real estate, General World Models might soon power completely new categories of software.
We think launching an internal incubator is a smart defensive move. As foundational video generation models converge on quality and raw performance, the next battle will be fought in vertical applications. Instead of waiting for third-party startups to figure out where world models actually deliver business value, Runway is attempting to pioneer those applications in-house.
