Runway adds Motion Brush for granular video control
Runway just rolled out Motion Brush for its Gen-2 video generator, letting you paint directly over any subject to command its exact motion and direction. The update also adds curated style presets, fractional camera controls in Director Mode, and sharper base image models.

Generative video has always suffered from a frustrating slot machine problem. You upload a still image wanting only the waterfall to flow, but the model hallucinates and shakes the entire mountain instead.
Runway is tackling that control issue head-on. The AI video pioneer just rolled out a suite of precision tools for Gen-2, headlined by a feature called Motion Brush.
Paint the motion where you want it
Motion Brush fundamentally changes how you direct movement in image-to-video mode.
Instead of writing complex prompts and praying for the best, you simply take a brush and paint over the exact subject or area you want animated. You pick a directional trajectory, dial in a numerical value for speed or intensity, and hit generate.
Everything you painted moves according to your direction, while the untouched parts of the frame remain steady.
Fractional camera moves and curated presets
Runway also upgraded its Director Mode camera controls to be significantly more granular.
Users can now punch in fractional numbers to fine-tune camera movements. That means subtle creeping zooms and smooth pans are now possible instead of jerky, exaggerated leaps.
Stacking fractional camera controls on top of Motion Brush lets you choreograph both the camera and the subject independently.
On top of that, Runway introduced Style Presets across Text to Image and Gen-2, cutting out the need for complex prompt engineering just to hit a specific aesthetic. The underlying base image model was also upgraded to deliver higher fidelity, better visual consistency, and crisper resolutions.
Why it matters
We think this update signals a crucial shift in generative video, moving from pure novelty toward actual production utility.
For creators and motion designers, control is the difference between a cool tech demo and a billable deliverable. Motion Brush directly attacks the waste of re-rolling prompts dozens of times just to isolate background motion. It makes dynamic concept art, product visuals, and narrative cutaways practically viable today.
Competitive pressure is mounting fast across the video landscape, and raw visual quality alone is no longer enough to win creators. The battle line is moving toward surgical creative control. By giving users tactile UI tools like brushes and fractional sliders rather than forcing everything through a text box, Runway is building something that feels much closer to a real virtual camera.
