Rick Rubin calls vibe coding the punk rock of AI

Published Reach 35

Music legend Rick Rubin just compared vibe coding to the punk rock explosion, noting that anyone with an idea can now create without deep technical expertise. The catch? He says most people are still stuck using AI to imitate others, and he is waiting for its truly authentic, disruptive breakthrough.

Legendary music producer Rick Rubin recently offered a sharp take on "vibe coding," calling it the punk rock of software development.

Back when punk broke out, you didn't need virtuosic guitar chops to start a band. If you had something to say, you could just say it. Rubin argues vibe coding works the exact same way: you no longer need traditional engineering expertise, just an idea and the ability to convey it.

Anyone can play three chords, but most are still doing covers

Lowering the barrier to entry is only half the equation, though.

Rubin pointed out that right now, most people are still using AI simply to imitate what already exists. He is still waiting for the exact moment vibe coding actually "goes punk"—when people stop copying existing software and start shipping raw, authentic work.

Why it matters

Rubin cut straight to the core tension inside generative AI today.

Vibe coding has eliminated the technical friction of writing software, but eliminating friction does not automatically manufacture taste or originality. We think his critique is an essential reality check: if everyone just uses natural language to spin up another clone of an existing app, we haven't started a revolution, we've just built an infinite karaoke machine.

In our view, the real shift will happen when non-technical creators stop trying to build standard software and start shipping weird, hyper-specific tools that traditional developers would never bother making. That is when vibe coding will finally have its authentic punk rock breakthrough.
