Replit's new Gemini 3 design mode turns ideas into sites in two minutes
Replit just launched Design Mode, powered by the new Gemini 3 model to turn plain English prompts into polished, interactive mockups and static sites in under two minutes. You can preview clickable layouts right away and hit Convert to App whenever you're ready to add real backend code.

Turning an idea into a functional web page usually involves an annoying back-and-forth: you mess around in a visual design tool, get stuck on layout details, and then have to rebuild everything in code anyway.
Replit wants to eliminate that awkward handoff entirely. The cloud development platform just launched Design Mode, a new feature powered by Google's brand new Gemini 3 model that generates interactive mockups and static sites in under two minutes.
From a prompt to a live site in two minutes
Replit has spent years establishing itself as the go-to environment for writing and deploying full-stack code. But non-technical founders and product teams kept hitting the same wall: making things look aesthetically pleasing from scratch was slow and painful.
Design Mode tackles that visual bottleneck. Users simply describe what they want using natural language commands, and the Replit Agent spins up a polished interface. Replit claims Gemini 3 was chosen specifically because it grasps typography, color schemes, visual hierarchy, and spatial layout, rather than simply spitting out raw code syntax.
Right now, Replit is pitching the tool across two main workflows. The first is rapid prototyping to rival tools like Claude Artifacts and Magic Patterns, letting product teams circulate clickable mockups without bugging an engineer. The second is static site creation, where Replit claims users can deploy landing pages and personal portfolios to custom domains roughly five times faster, taking aim directly at website builders like Wix and Squarespace.
The "Convert to App" bridge
The clever part of the workflow is how it handles interactivity. When you ask Design Mode to add complex components like user logins, shopping carts, or forms, it builds high-fidelity visual representations of those features without hooking up real plumbing under the hood.
Once the visual layout looks right, users can click a single button labeled Convert to App. That instantly turns the static prototype into a full-stack Replit workspace, where developers can plug in real backend logic, configure databases, and wire up APIs without copying and pasting assets across different software.
According to project lead Vaibhav Kumar and design engineer Stanley Huang, getting this to work required overhauling how Replit's Agent handles initial scaffolding, alongside new front-end data pipelines running between user inputs and AI servers.
Why it matters
We think Replit's approach here is remarkably smart because it targets the most frustrating gap in modern product development: the handoff between design and implementation.
For solo creators and early-stage founders, this offers an immediate way to test marketing messages and product concepts without hiring a UI designer or wrestling with frontend frameworks. You can go from zero to a live, clickable prototype before your team meeting ends.
For the broader industry, Replit is pulling off a pincer move against two different categories of competitors. On one side, it challenges dedicated AI design and prototype generators like Claude Artifacts and v0 by offering native hosting and a direct path to production. On the other side, it threatens traditional no-code website builders like Wix by bundling AI-driven design with real developer environments.
That said, the real test will be code quality once a user clicks Convert to App. If the underlying code generated by Gemini 3 turns out to be brittle or bloated, engineers will still end up rewriting it from scratch, defeating the purpose of a seamless bridge.
