Replit adds Free Mode for 30x more agent building

Published Reach 50

Replit just launched Free Mode, a new agent tier powered by OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna that lets subscribers build up to 30x more without burning credits on routine ideation and chat. Limits reset every five hours, removing the constant token anxiety before users step up to Power or Max Mode for complex tasks.

Coding with AI agents has always come with a nasty side effect: meter anxiety. Every prompt, clarification, and stray brainstorm chip away at a finite bucket of credits, making users ration their curiosity.

Replit wants to end that friction. The platform has officially launched Free Mode, an OpenAI GPT-5.6 Luna-powered tier that lets users chat, brainstorm, and handle routine builds without burning through credits.

Unlimited ideation with a five-hour reset

For $20 a month, Replit Core subscribers can now build up to 30 times more software than before. Everyday activities like planning features, exploring logic, asking questions, and light coding no longer deduct usage balance, alongside up to 30 hours of monthly chat time.

Free Mode comes with a ceiling, but it resets every five hours. Pro subscribers receive even higher allowances. When a task requires deeper architectural work or long-context reasoning, Replit can seamlessly escalate the job to other tiers.

Alongside Free Mode, Replit renamed its stack. Economy Mode is now Power Mode, balancing speed and cost. For heavy lifting, Max Mode taps frontier reasoning models like GPT-5.6 Sol. Replit also overhauled its workspace so full project context persists between free chats and paid deep builds, killing the need to copy-paste prompts from external chat apps.

Why it matters

We think Replit made the smartest product move in developer tools this quarter by taking aim at token anxiety instead of raw benchmark scores.

For creators and solo developers, early-stage exploratory chatting is where software takes shape. Taxing users for simply clarifying project requirements was always counterproductive. By leveraging OpenAI's cheaper GPT-5.6 Luna inference to absorb zero-risk ideation, Replit makes its $20 Core tier an easy recommendation for anyone building modern web apps.

For the wider tooling market, this draws a hard line against rivals like Cursor and GitHub Copilot. The competition is no longer just about who plugs in the newest frontier model, but who can engineer clever routing that turns falling API costs into seemingly infinite user capacity.

The real test will be Luna's ceiling. If Free Mode constantly stumbles on basic logic and nudges users toward Max Mode, the feature will feel like an aggressive upsell funnel rather than an empowering daily driver. But if the baseline holds up, Replit just set a new standard for how AI subscriptions should feel.
