Regal brings movie showtimes and ticketing straight into ChatGPT

Published Reach 33

Regal Cineworld just launched a dedicated ChatGPT app built with The Boxoffice Company, making it the first major U.S. theater chain to do so. Users can ask conversational prompts about nearby showtimes or premium formats and get redirected to Regal's site to check out. The integration covers 5,386 screens across 394 locations, turning casual chatbot movie banter directly into ticket sales.

Planning a movie night usually means juggling two different apps: one to look up reviews, and another to compare showtimes, ticket formats, and drive times across local theaters.

Now, Regal is trying to collapse that whole process into a single chat window.

Regal Cineworld just launched a dedicated moviegoing app inside ChatGPT, built in partnership with cinema tech provider The Boxoffice Company. The rollout makes Regal the first major U.S. theatrical chain to establish a direct presence inside OpenAI's platform.

Turning chats into movie tickets

Built on The Boxoffice Company's Boost platform, the tool connects ChatGPT directly to Regal's real-time cinema inventory, covering 5,386 screens across 394 locations in the United States.

Users can ask natural questions like what is playing nearby, when the next screening is, or which premium formats are showing locally. The chatbot pulls live movie details, available formats, and screening schedules directly into the interface. Once you pick a show, it kicks you out to Regal's website to complete the purchase.

The goal, as The Boxoffice Company CEO Stan Ruszkowski put it, is simply to turn AI conversations into movie tickets.

Why it matters

We think this launch highlights how traditional brick-and-mortar retail is quietly adapting to conversational discovery.

For moviegoers, the immediate utility is cutting out manual search filters. Asking a chatbot for a specific premium screening after 8 p.m. nearby is dramatically faster than tapping through conventional theater menus. That said, having to bounce to Regal's website to finish the transaction means the loop is not fully closed yet.

For the entertainment industry, this is an early land grab. As people increasingly use generative AI tools to plan their evenings, exhibitors cannot afford to be absent from the conversation. Regal's approach is pragmatic: by partnering with a specialized tech vendor rather than building everything from scratch, they plugged thousands of screens into a massive new interface with relatively low friction.
