Perplexity wants to build your entire project

Published Reach 51

Perplexity just introduced Perplexity Computer, an end-to-end AI system designed to handle complex, multi-step workflows. Instead of just answering search queries, the system unifies current AI capabilities to autonomously research, design, code, deploy, and manage projects from start to finish. It marks a clear shift from conversational search into full-fledged agentic AI.

AI companies are rapidly moving away from chat interfaces to build autonomous digital workers. Now, Perplexity is stepping up with a massive bet on model flexibility.

The company launched Perplexity Computer, an end-to-end system designed to autonomously research, design, code, deploy, and manage complete workflows from start to finish.

19 models under the hood

The new tool is available exclusively to subscribers on the company's $200 per month Max tier. Instead of sticking to a single model family, Computer orchestrates across 19 different AI models behind the scenes.

CEO Aravind Srinivas took a direct shot at Anthropic during the debut, claiming that the biggest weakness of Claude is that it only coworks with Claude.

When a user defines a project outcome, Computer spins up autonomous sub-agents that operate in their own cloud-based sandboxes. Perplexity claims these agents can run continuously for months without exposing users to the security vulnerabilities seen in local agents like OpenClaw.

Perplexity's internal data shows why this approach matters: in December 2025, user queries for visual tasks mostly went to Gemini Flash, coding was dominated by Claude Sonnet 4.5, and medical research went to GPT-5.1. The system can even route certain tasks to modified open-source models to keep compute costs down.

Pivoting away from ads to high-margin whales

While the concept is sleek, the launch had a rocky moment. According to TechCrunch, Perplexity had scheduled a live press demonstration last week, only to cancel it hours prior due to last-minute bugs.

The tool underscores a broader identity shift for Perplexity. After ditching its advertising business late last year to protect user trust, the company is consciously ignoring the mass consumer race against OpenAI's 800 million weekly users.

Perplexity executives stated in briefings that they no longer track monthly active users, choosing instead to focus on enterprise users who make what they call GDP-moving decisions. Ahead of its upcoming Ask developer conference on March 11 and an iOS rollout for its Comet browser next month, the company is focusing heavily on monetization, even as Reddit users complain about tighter rate limits on lower tiers.

Why it matters

For everyday consumers, the $200 monthly price tag is an immediate deterrent, and there is no reason to jump in just for curiosity. However, for elite analysts, researchers, and solo founders, having a sandboxed agent that can pull datasets, generate analysis, and publish web visualizations end-to-end could easily replace thousands of dollars in fragmented software subscriptions.

Across the industry, this is a daring chess move against Anthropic and OpenAI. While the model labs want you trapped inside their proprietary walled gardens, Perplexity is positioning itself as the master conductor, turning frontier models into interchangeable utility providers.

We think this aggregator strategy is brilliant on paper because no single AI lab currently leads in every domain. But it also carries obvious fragility: Perplexity remains dependent on the APIs of the very rivals it competes against, and pulling a press demo right before launch suggests orchestrating 19 autonomous models reliably over long horizons is still much harder than it looks.
