Perplexity brings real-time AI search to Vercel apps
Perplexity just partnered with Vercel to plug its online search models directly into the Vercel AI SDK. Developers building JavaScript and TypeScript web apps can now tap into pplx-7b-online and pplx-70b-online to fetch live web data without training cutoffs. Vercel also launched a multi-model AI playground alongside the update.

If you build web apps, you already know the headache of LLMs having a strict knowledge cut-off date. The second a user asks for last night's game score or breaking news, standard models hallucinate unless you build your own custom retrieval pipeline.
Now, AI search challenger Perplexity wants to save you the trouble. The California startup just teamed up with developer platform Vercel to bring its real-time, web-connected language models directly into the hands of web developers.
Web search straight into the codebase
Under the hood, developers using Vercel can now plug into Perplexity's online API, specifically the pplx-7b-online and pplx-70b-online models.
Unlike standard foundational models, these have no knowledge expiration date. Perplexity relies on its own crawling, search, and indexing infrastructure to pull fresh web snippets into the model on the fly, actively downranking SEO-spam sites in the process.
For anyone building real-time dashboards, sports apps, or customer support bots, this completely bypasses the need to set up a dedicated search pipeline from scratch.
It also fits Perplexity's rapid expansion playbook. Just over the past few weeks, the startup pushed its search into Brilliant Labs' AI smart glasses, became the default engine on the Arc browser, and powered query handling for the Rabbit r1.
Vercel builds an ORM for the AI era
Perplexity is not alone on the launchpad. Vercel is treating this update as a major expansion of its broader AI developer suite.
Alongside Perplexity, Vercel announced integrations with AI voice leader ElevenLabs, plus seven other providers including Modal, Replicate, Anyscale, Fal, Together AI, and LMNT.
Vercel's open-source AI SDK already supported giants like OpenAI and Mistral for building streaming JavaScript and TypeScript chat apps. The team compares this SDK to an ORM for any AI model, designed to standardize how developers query text, images, and audio.
To make model evaluation easier, Vercel also launched an in-dashboard AI playground where developers can run side-by-side prompt tests before picking a provider for production.
Why it matters
We think this partnership is a win for practical developer velocity. Building a custom retrieval-augmented generation setup with live web data is usually expensive and tedious; swapping in a single online model name inside a Vercel project removes massive friction for indie hackers and product teams alike.
For Perplexity, it is a smart distribution move. Competing against Google and Microsoft on consumer search head-on is brutal. By embedding itself into developer frameworks and hardware devices, Perplexity quietly becomes the default discovery layer behind countless third-party interfaces.
However, developers should remain cautious. Relying on an external live-search model means you inherit Perplexity's indexing quirks and parsing latency. If your app demands ultra-low latency or zero hallucinations, you still need strict validation guards before shipping this to end users.
