Perplexity now books your dinner reservations
Perplexity just integrated OpenTable directly into its AI engine, letting users search and book tables across 60,000 restaurants without leaving the chat. You can ask for specific vibes like outdoor seating or vegan menus, and hit "Reserve" in one click. It turns conversational search into a practical errand runner.

The Friday night ritual of finding a dinner spot usually sucks. You bounce between Google Maps for photos, Reddit for unfiltered opinions, and OpenTable or Resy to see if a table is actually open. Perplexity wants to end that multi-app shuffle.
Perplexity has officially integrated OpenTable into its conversational search platform. The tie-up lets users discover and book tables across 60,000 restaurants worldwide, entirely through natural language prompts.
From vague cravings to a confirmed table
Instead of fiddling with rigid drop-down filters, you can just tell Perplexity what kind of night you want. Prompts like "romantic Italian spot in San Francisco with outdoor seating" or "great vegan place with a kid-friendly menu" yield curated picks pulled directly from OpenTable menus and diner reviews.
Once you pick a spot, there is no redirection to a third-party browser tab. A clean "Reserve" button appears right inside the chat interface, letting you lock down the reservation in a single tap.
Cutting the phone call friction
Dining research comes with real consumer fatigue. Studies show that 54 percent of Americans research eateries online before booking, and 27 percent abandon the search if vital details are tough to find.
OpenTable data also reveals that 46 percent of diner inquiries revolve around operating hours, while 39 percent are specific menu questions. Perplexity handles those answers instantly, which spares diners awkward phone calls and keeps restaurant staff focused on the floor rather than answering the front desk.
OpenTable CTO Sagar Mehta noted that the partnership bridges millions of Perplexity users directly to their global dining network. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas framed the shift simply, saying booking dinner should feel as effortless as asking a friend for a recommendation. The two companies are already planning deeper features, including past dining history recommendations and fully autonomous table reservations.
Why it matters
AI search is finally morphing from an answer engine into an action engine.
For diners, this is what consumer AI was supposed to feel like. Reading a neat summary of a bistro is nice, but closing the loop by booking the actual table without leaving the prompt is a genuine time-saver. If you regularly organize dinners or travel to unfamiliar cities, it is an immediately useful upgrade.
For the search wars, it shows the real frontier for conversational agents. Google built a monopoly by directing web traffic to third parties; Perplexity is trying to capture user intent and fulfill the transaction on the spot. Partnering with OpenTable gives Perplexity instant access to 60,000 vetted restaurants without having to sign up a single merchant itself.
We think this is a smart, pragmatic play. Instead of waiting for full autonomous web browsing agents to reliably click through web forms, embedding native platform integrations provides an immediate, reliable checkout experience. The real test will be latency and inventory accuracy, because nothing kills trust in an AI assistant faster than getting a booking confirmation that the restaurant never received.
