Perplexity is about to become AI's newest unicorn
Perplexity is finalizing a new funding round that will push the AI search startup to a $1 billion valuation, according to The Wall Street Journal. That nearly doubles its $520 million valuation from just two months ago, alongside topping $10 million in annual revenue. Investors are clearly eager to back a challenger to Google's search empire.

Two months ago, Perplexity was valued at $520 million. Now, it is officially joining the three-comma club.
The AI-powered search engine is finalizing a new funding round that will push its valuation to around $1 billion, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. While the exact cash injection has not been disclosed yet, the jump means the startup has essentially doubled its valuation in roughly sixty days.
Investors simply cannot get enough of generative AI right now, and Perplexity is riding that wave straight to unicorn status.
Wild valuations and $10M in revenue
Perplexity's trajectory over the past year has been nothing short of dizzying.
Back in March of last year, the company pulled in a modest $25.6 million Series A led by New Enterprise Associates.
Then came its $73.6 million Series B just two months ago, led by IVP and backed by heavyweights like Nvidia and Jeff Bezos. That round set its valuation at $520 million.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the company also recently crossed $10 million in annual revenue.
Paying a 100x multiple on revenue sounds wild in any normal software environment, but normal rules do not apply in AI right now. Just last month, AI cloud provider Lambda raised $320 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, Bret Taylor's conversational AI firm Sierra snagged $110 million at a nearly $1 billion valuation, and China-based Moonshot AI reportedly raised over $1 billion from Alibaba and HongShan.
Taking on the search titan
Perplexity is aiming squarely at Google, and everyone knows why.
Modern web search has become a chore. Between sponsored ads, paid promotions, and generic content gaming SEO algorithms, finding a simple answer often takes several clicks and a lot of scrolling.
Perplexity replaces that mess with a clean interface. You ask a direct question, and its AI delivers a synthesized response with citations, cutting out the ad-heavy clutter.
Still, Google remains an absolute titan. Even Microsoft, armed with billions of dollars and OpenAI's cutting-edge models, has barely moved the needle against Google search.
Why it matters
We think this valuation jump shows investors are desperate to own a piece of whatever replaces the traditional search bar.
For power users, researchers, and everyday knowledge workers, Perplexity is already worth using today. It saves serious time on research synthesis and cuts through the SEO junk that Google refuses to clean up. But for navigation, local commerce, or quick transactional queries, traditional search still holds the ground.
The clever part of Perplexity's strategy is speed and clarity. By shipping fast and focusing purely on clean answers, it built a passionate user base before Google could figure out how to integrate AI without destroying its lucrative ad business.
However, the risks are towering. Running complex AI models for every single search query is ridiculously expensive compared to serving indexed links. With just $10 million in revenue, Perplexity faces brutal compute bills that will scale right alongside its popularity.
Taking on Google has historically been a fool's errand. Perplexity just bought itself a very expensive seat at the high-stakes table, but staying there will be the real test.
