Perplexity cuts publishers in on AI ad revenue

Published Reach 42

Perplexity just launched a revenue-sharing program for publishers, signing up partners like TIME, Der Spiegel, and Fortune. When media content is cited in sponsored follow-up queries, publishers will earn a revenue share, plus free API access to build custom on-site answer engines and a year of Enterprise Pro for their entire staff.

AI search engines summarizing articles without sending traffic back has been a major point of friction for newsrooms everywhere.

Perplexity officially launched its new Publishers' Program to try and patch things up with content creators. The startup announced an initial roster of launch partners, including TIME, Der Spiegel, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, and WordPress.com.

Revenue shares and free enterprise perks

Perplexity's olive branch comes packed with three main offerings.

First is revenue sharing. Over the coming months, Perplexity will introduce sponsored follow-up prompts within its related questions feature and Pages. Whenever Perplexity generates advertising revenue from an answer that cites a partner publisher's reporting, that publisher gets a cut of the earnings.

To keep things transparent, Perplexity is teaming up with ScalePost.ai, a platform that gives publishers analytics on exactly how and when AI models cite their stories.

Second is free developer access. Partners get complimentary access to Perplexity's Online LLM APIs along with dedicated technical support. This lets outlets build custom answer bots directly on their own websites that only pull answers from their own archive.

Finally, every employee across these partner organizations gets a free one-year subscription to Perplexity Enterprise Pro for research and fact-checking. Looking ahead, Perplexity also floated the idea of bundled subscriptions, letting readers pay a flat fee covering both Perplexity Pro and newsroom paywalls.

Why it matters

AI search startups have been caught in a messy tug-of-war with journalism, facing accusations of scraping reporting while starving outlets of web traffic.

We think this program is a clever tactical shift. Instead of paying massive upfront licensing checks like OpenAI, Perplexity is pitching a dynamic revenue-sharing model tied directly to citation-driven ad impressions, sweetened with free developer tooling.

For publishers, taking the deal looks like a no-brainer right now. They get free enterprise-grade research seats for their newsrooms and can deploy modern search widgets on their own properties without engineering overhead.

However, the real question is how much money this will actually generate. Sponsored follow-up queries are an unproven ad format, and if the revenue trickling down to media companies turns out to be negligible, Perplexity's peace offering won't keep copyright headaches at bay for long.
