Perplexity's Computer takes on U.S. taxes

Perplexity just rolled out Computer for Taxes inside its Perplexity Computer platform. Built on the Agent Skills protocol, it loads modular tax knowledge grounded in IRS rules to draft federal returns on official forms and audit professionally prepared filings. Internal tests even caught a 67% deduction understatement by an attorney under 2025 overtime rules.

Every tax season brings the same slow, painful paperwork and the lingering fear that you left money on the table.

Perplexity just introduced Computer for Taxes, a new feature inside its Perplexity Computer platform designed to handle complex U.S. federal tax questions, review filings, and even draft returns.

Modular tax knowledge on IRS forms

Frontier AI models usually stumble on taxes because the tax code updates constantly. A model with a September 2025 cutoff, for instance, misses key regulations under the recent OBBBA budget legislation.

Perplexity solved this by building loadable tax modules grounded in official IRS materials using the Agent Skills protocol. These modules give the model up-to-date domain expertise without retraining the core model.

In practice, Computer for Taxes reviews tax documents, interviews users about their financial situations, and drafts returns directly onto official IRS forms. It can also build functional tools like spreadsheets for tracking depreciation or dashboards managing real estate passive loss deductions.

It is also designed to audit professional work. In one internal test on an attorney-prepared return, Computer caught a 67% understatement of deductions under the 2025 No Tax on Overtime rules, recovering thousands of dollars. Perplexity notes that all outputs are for reference only and do not constitute formal tax advice.

Why it matters

We think Perplexity is taking the right architectural approach here. Packaging domain knowledge into loadable agent modules rather than relying on standard model weights is the only realistic way to keep up with fast-changing legislation like OBBBA.

For filers and small business owners, the real sweet spot right now is not replacing human accountants, but using Computer as an instant second opinion. If an attorney can miss a 67% deduction under unfamiliar provisions, having a specialized agent review the paperwork is an easy win that costs very little time.

However, tax filing is a zero-error domain. Perplexity includes a strict disclaimer that its outputs are not formal tax advice, which clearly signals the legal limit. As long as users bear the full liability for an IRS audit, people will still hesitate to let an AI handle their actual submission without human sign-off.
