Perplexity revamps AI shopping just in time for Black Friday
Perplexity just relaunched its AI shopping experience for free across all users ahead of Black Friday, adding chat memory and intelligent product cards to replace endless item grids. It taps past queries for personalized picks and leverages a PayPal partnership for checkout. Why it matters: AI search engines are racing to turn chatbots into full-blown shopping agents that can browse and buy for you.

Perplexity is overhauling its AI shopping hub just in time for Black Friday, rolling it out for free to all users alongside smarter memory, personalized picks, and a direct jab at the traditional e-commerce experience.
Shopping as a chat, not an endless grid
Instead of scrolling through what Perplexity calls an endless grid of items that cannot inspire joy, users can now talk their way through purchasing decisions.
The revamped assistant narrows down specific product categories through natural back-and-forth conversation, pulling from past chat history to tailor recommendations to individual preferences.
Once the search narrows, Perplexity serves up new intelligent product cards highlighting top picks. For the final step, the search engine is tapping into its earlier partnership with PayPal to streamline the checkout process.
The agentic cart rush meets SEO pollution
Perplexity is far from alone in trying to turn conversations into commerce.
Agentic features inside browsers like Perplexity Comet and ChatGPT Atlas are already built to roam the web and fill carts on a shopper's behalf. Google recently pushed this further with Gemini, rolling out automated purchasing the moment an item hits a user-defined price target.
Yet the entire concept faces a growing structural problem.
Brands are aggressively tuning their marketing to be easily digested by AI scrapers, while authoritative review platforms are increasingly blocking AI crawlers altogether. As a result, consumer bots risk recommending products based on polished PR material rather than genuine hands-on testing.
Why it matters
For holiday shoppers, testing Perplexity's conversational search is an easy win if you are overwhelmed by open browser tabs and spec comparisons. As a discovery engine, it saves real time.
However, we think handing over your wallet to AI agents right now remains premature. Perplexity's integration with PayPal is a clever play to capture actual transaction volume, taking on Google at the bottom of the funnel.
But the Achilles' heel is source integrity. Until platforms solve the crawler standoff with independent reviewers, shoppers should treat these AI recommendations as starting points rather than unbiased truth.
