Microsoft Paint gets an AI Restyle button

Published Reach 41

Microsoft just rolled out a new AI feature called Restyle to Windows 11 Insiders in Paint. It lets you instantly transform the artistic style of any canvas image by picking from preset styles in the Copilot menu. The catch: it requires a Microsoft account and only runs on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.

Microsoft is testing another AI tool inside Paint, letting you transform the look of your artwork with a few clicks.

The feature, called Restyle, is rolling out in Paint version 11.2509.441.0 to Windows Insiders across the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels on Windows 11.

Turn sketches into new styles

Using it is straightforward. You open Paint, select the Restyle option from the Copilot menu, pick a style from a preset list, and click Generate.

Once the image is ready, you can paste it back onto your canvas, copy it, or save it for later.

The catch is the hardware requirement. Restyle is currently restricted to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, and you must sign in with a Microsoft account to use it.

Why it matters

Baking image restyling directly into a default desktop app makes basic generative art accessible to casual doodlers without having to leave the canvas or fire up Midjourney.

However, locking the feature exclusively behind Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs severely limits its audience. We think Microsoft is still searching for everyday reasons to convince people to buy Copilot+ hardware, but gating a lightweight Paint feature behind specific silicon feels more like hardware push than genuine software convenience.
