Oracle and OpenAI drop Texas mega-cluster expansion
Oracle and OpenAI just abandoned plans to expand their flagship AI data center in Abilene, Texas, walking away from 600 megawatts of capacity after financing talks stalled. Meta is already in talks to lease the site from developer Crusoe, with Nvidia actively brokering the deal to keep its chips in the facility.
When it comes to building massive AI clusters, power is the new oil, and the land grab is getting fierce.
According to a Bloomberg report, Oracle and OpenAI have officially walked away from plans to expand their flagship AI data center in Abilene, Texas. The project was intended to be a major pillar of OpenAI's ambitious Stargate initiative.
Sources familiar with the matter said the deal fell apart after negotiations dragged out over financing terms, alongside shifts in OpenAI's operational needs.
Meta steps in with an assist from Nvidia
The scrapped expansion involved adding 600 megawatts of capacity adjacent to the current Stargate site. That additional computing muscle will now be developed at a different campus instead.
OpenAI's exit opened an immediate door for Meta Platforms, which is now exploring a lease for the Abilene expansion site from developer Crusoe.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Nvidia actively stepped in to broker talks between Meta and Crusoe. The chipmaker's goal was clear: lock in the facility for Nvidia hardware before AMD could gain any ground.
Oracle, OpenAI, and Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Why it matters
This collapse says far more about the state of AI infrastructure than a standard contract dispute.
We are seeing data center capacity, especially sites with hundreds of megawatts of guaranteed power, become the ultimate scarce asset. The fact that Meta can step in almost instantaneously after OpenAI walks proves that hyperscalers will pounce on turnkey power wherever they can find it. For developers and businesses, this constant land grab means top-tier compute availability remains locked in the hands of a very small club.
Nvidia playing matchmaker is also a masterclass in defensive dominance. Nvidia is no longer just selling GPUs; it is shaping real estate deals to box out AMD and protect its hardware moat.
At the same time, the fact that even OpenAI and Oracle hit a wall over financing shows that the sheer capital required for mega-clusters is testing everyone's limits. Ambition is high, but the balance sheet still has to balance.
