Opera connects ChatGPT and Claude directly to your browser

Published Reach 40

Opera just launched Browser Connector in Early Bird mode for Opera One and Opera GX, hooking ChatGPT or Claude straight into your browser via MCP. Instead of endless copy-pasting, the AI can read open tabs, grab screenshots, and help you compare research across pages. Users keep full permission control, and the AI cannot click or fill forms autonomously.

How many times a day do you copy a chunk of text or screenshot a dashboard just to feed it into your favorite chatbot?

Opera wants to kill that routine. The browser maker just rolled out Browser Connector, a free experimental feature in Early Bird mode for both Opera One and Opera GX that hooks Claude and ChatGPT directly into your browsing session via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Instead of acting like an underpaid messenger ferrying links between tabs, you can now let frontier models tap into your active workspace.

Claude and ChatGPT get browser eyes

Once hooked up, your connected model can inspect open tabs, read on-page text, and even take screenshots when a page relies on visual charts or tricky layouts.

Imagine shopping for PC parts across five separate retailer tabs. Instead of pasting specs back and forth, you can tell your AI to scan those open tabs, generate a side-by-side comparison, open fresh tabs to look up missing benchmark tests, and tidy up by closing them when done.

Opera is also being cautious with permissions. Reading open tabs and snapping screenshots are enabled by default, but rummaging through your browsing history or closing tabs requires explicit opt-in.

Crucially, this is not an unchecked autonomous agent. The AI cannot click interactive buttons or fill out forms on your behalf, so you do not have to worry about a hallucinating model submitting transactions behind your back.

Why it matters

We think Opera is playing this very smart by embracing neutrality.

While big tech rivals keep pushing proprietary AI sidebars you probably did not ask for, Opera is using Anthropic's open MCP standard to meet users where they already are. If you pay for Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus, you do not want another walled garden; you just want your existing workflow to run faster.

For power searchers, students, and analysts, this is an immediate quality-of-life upgrade that removes friction right away without costing a dime.

It does stop short of full browser automation since it cannot click or submit forms, but that limitation is honestly a feature right now. Until autonomous agent guardrails are bulletproof, giving models clear read-only sightlines while keeping hands off the steering wheel strikes the right balance between convenience and security.
