OpenMontage turns your AI coding assistant into a video studio

Published Reach 48

OpenMontage is an open-source AI video production system that hooks directly into assistants like Claude Code and Cursor. Give it a prompt, and it handles research, scriptwriting, voiceover, and editing. It even shows you storyboards and cost estimates first, clocking a 60-second sample animation at just $1.33.

OpenMontage is an open-source framework that turns your existing AI coding tools—like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex—into an automated video production studio. Since launching in late March, the project has already gathered 68,500 GitHub stars, adding over 3,300 in the past week alone.

From a single prompt to final cut

Give it a simple command like "make a 60-second animated explainer on how neural networks learn," and it takes care of the whole chain: researching the topic, drafting the script, generating visual assets and voiceovers, and assembling the final edit. Under the hood, it bundles over a dozen production pipelines, 100+ tools, and more than 700 skill and workflow documents. You can also drop in an existing reference video, and it will analyze the pacing, camera angles, and aesthetic style to produce a new piece in the same vein.

Crucially, it keeps your spending on a tight leash. Before doing any heavy lifting, OpenMontage generates an upfront price quote and a full storyboard for your review, only burning API credits once you approve. In one official demo—a 60-second short about a lonely banana befriending a kiwi—the entire production cost just $1.33.

Why it matters

If you already spend your days inside Cursor or Claude Code, this project is well worth testing. Instead of manually stitching together disparate tools for copywriting, voice synthesis, and video diffusion models, OpenMontage orchestrates the entire workflow directly inside your development environment. Approving the storyboard and cost estimate beforehand is also a remarkably sensible way to kill the expensive "slot machine" trial-and-error cycle typical of AI media generation.
