OpenAI drops teen safety blueprint with AI age detection
OpenAI just launched its Teen Safety Blueprint, laying out design guardrails and policy standards for young users. Alongside new parental controls, the company is actively developing an age-prediction system to detect minors and tailor their ChatGPT experience accordingly.

OpenAI just released its Teen Safety Blueprint, laying out guidelines for how artificial intelligence should treat younger users and giving regulators a template to work from.
Rather than waiting for government mandates, the company says it is already rolling out the framework across its own stack.
Guessing age from the prompt box
Over the past few months, OpenAI added tighter guardrails for young users alongside parental controls with proactive alerts.
The biggest technical shift is an in-development age-prediction system. The goal is to detect whether a user is under 18 and automatically adjust their ChatGPT experience accordingly.
Why it matters
For parents, algorithmic age detection sounds a lot better than the classic honor system of checking a box.
However, we think predicting a user's age based on their AI interactions is a double-edged sword. If it gets too aggressive, it risks false flags and raises immediate privacy questions about how closely OpenAI is profiling conversational behavior.
Strategically, OpenAI is trying to set the benchmark before regulators impose their own rules. If this catches on, proactive age-gating will become the default cost of doing business for consumer AI.
