OpenAI teases GPT-5 reveal in cryptic 'LIVE5TREAM' event
OpenAI just teased a Thursday livestream with a not-so-subtle hint: replacing the 's' in livestream with a '5'. CEO Sam Altman had already posted a screenshot showing 'ChatGPT 5', and OpenAI's applied research lead teased its public debut. Why it matters: After months of anticipation, the next-gen flagship model looks finally ready to drop.

OpenAI isn't even trying to be subtle anymore.
In a post on X, the company announced an upcoming broadcast with the caption “LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10AM PT.” Swapping the letter “S” for a “5” makes it pretty clear what’s on deck: the long-awaited GPT-5.
The breadcrumbs lead to Thursday
The tease follows a weekend full of not-so-accidental leaks. On Sunday, Sam Altman shared a screenshot displaying “ChatGPT 5” in the top corner. On Monday, OpenAI’s head of applied research posted that he was excited to see how the public receives GPT-5.
According to The Verge, OpenAI had been targeting an early August rollout, with Microsoft readying server capacity as early as February. The stream also caps off a huge week, coming just two days after OpenAI surprised everyone by releasing GPT-OSS, an open-weight model designed to run locally on laptops.
Why it matters
Users and developers have been waiting for a real generational leap since GPT-4 landed. Whether GPT-5 is worth getting hyped about comes down to whether it actually breaks through the current reasoning plateau or just delivers incremental benchmarks.
We think dropping an open-weight model on Tuesday and following it with a flagship launch on Thursday is a clever one-two punch. It caters to local developers while protecting OpenAI's frontier crown. That said, hyper-aggressive hype creates massive expectations, and anything short of a genuine leap forward could trigger instant blowback.
