OpenAI drops $10M to tame superhuman AI

Published Reach 35

OpenAI just launched a $10M Superalignment Fast Grants program in partnership with Eric Schmidt to fund research into aligning superhuman AI systems. The initiative offers grants from $100K to $2M alongside $150K graduate fellowships, prioritizing weak-to-strong generalization, interpretability, and scalable oversight—with no prior alignment experience required.

OpenAI and Eric Schmidt just put $10M on the table to solve one of AI's biggest existential puzzles: how do you control a system that is vastly smarter than you?

The company launched its Superalignment Fast Grants program, offering funding between $100K and $2M for academic labs, nonprofits, and individual researchers, alongside a dedicated $150K fellowship for graduate students.

OpenAI believes superintelligence could arrive within the next 10 years. Today's safety relies on RLHF, where humans grade model outputs. But if a superhuman model writes a million lines of mind-bending code, human oversight breaks down. Basically, we become the elementary school teachers trying to grade a PhD dissertation.

The grant pool specifically targets technical breakthroughs in controlling smarter models.

Top of the list is weak-to-strong generalization, which asks how a weaker supervisor (humans) can reliably guide a stronger system. Another major focus is model interpretability, essentially cracking open the black box to build tools like an AI lie detector.

They are also funding scalable oversight, looking at how AI can assist humans in evaluating other complex AI systems, alongside chain-of-thought faithfulness and adversarial robustness.

The fellowship for graduate students is especially juicy: $75K in living stipend plus $75K in compute and research funding. Crucially, OpenAI noted that applicants need zero prior alignment experience, actively courting talent outside the existing safety bubble.

Why it matters

For researchers and grad students, this is an incredible opportunity. Academic labs are constantly starved for compute, and OpenAI is offering a direct path into frontier safety research with real budget and no gatekeeping on prior experience.

For the industry, it is a masterclass in outsourcing basic science. Solving superalignment is a massive, unsolved theoretical challenge. By spending $10M—a rounding error compared to their training clusters—OpenAI effectively enlists the global academic community to de-risk its future business.

We think it also reveals an uncomfortable truth. OpenAI is openly admitting that existing alignment techniques like RLHF will not scale to superintelligence. If foundational safety research cannot keep pace with scaling compute, the industry is racing toward superhuman systems with no steering wheel.
