OpenAI secures $122B round to build the AI superapp

Published Reach 59

OpenAI just closed a massive $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion post-money valuation, backed by Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank. The company is generating $2 billion in monthly revenue with ChatGPT topping 900 million weekly active users. OpenAI plans to pour the capital into computing power and roll ChatGPT, Codex, and agent workflows into a single AI superapp.

After months of headlines about Sora being wound down, Pentagon entanglements, and Anthropic chipping away at its enterprise footprint, OpenAI just answered the skeptics with the largest private fundraise in tech history.

The AI leader announced a massive $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion post-money valuation. It also made clear that this war chest isn't just for training next-gen models, but to build a unified AI superapp ahead of an anticipated public offering.

The mega-round and retail capital

The investor syndicate reads like a who's who of global finance. SoftBank co-led the round alongside Andreessen Horowitz, D. E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG, and T. Rowe Price accounts. Core strategic partners Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank anchored the raise, with long-term backer Microsoft participating as well. According to The Rundown, those three anchor partners accounted for $110 billion of the round, with Amazon's commitment reportedly containing an AGI clause that could adjust terms if OpenAI reaches that benchmark.

In a rare move for a late-stage private firm, OpenAI also collected over $3 billion directly from retail investors through private banking networks. It revealed that shares will soon be included in several ARK Invest ETFs, widening ownership to everyday investors. On top of the equity raise, the company expanded an undrawn revolving credit facility to roughly $4.7 billion with backing from Wall Street heavyweights like JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Citi.

Industry watchers at TechCrunch noted that the company's release read less like a standard startup update and more like an early S-1 filing, heavily detailing unit economics, infrastructure scale, and market capture.

Enterprise acceleration and the superapp pivot

OpenAI backed up the headline valuation with jaw-dropping operational figures. Monthly revenue has now reached $2 billion, which puts its annual run rate around $24 billion. OpenAI claimed its current revenue is compounding four times faster than internet-era titans Alphabet and Meta did at the same stage.

On the consumer front, ChatGPT has surged past 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paid subscribers. It now commands six times the monthly web visits and app sessions of the next largest AI product, and four times the total user time spent compared to all competitors combined. A quiet ads pilot launched less than six weeks ago is already generating over $100 million in annual recurring revenue.

Yet the most critical shift is in the workplace. Enterprise clients now drive over 40% of OpenAI's revenue, up from roughly 30% last year, and the company projects business revenue will reach parity with consumer subscriptions by the end of 2026. Weekly users of its Codex agent jumped fivefold over the past three months to two million, while API usage topped 15 billion tokens per minute.

To lock in this advantage, OpenAI announced it is merging ChatGPT, Codex, web search, and agentic actions into a single unified AI superapp. Backing this software is a highly diversified compute roadmap spanning Nvidia chips, AMD, Cerebras, AWS Trainium, and custom silicon co-developed with Broadcom, distributed across clouds from Microsoft, Oracle, AWS, Google Cloud, and CoreWeave.

Why it matters

For builders and professionals, OpenAI's push toward a consolidated superapp changes the game. Instead of juggling fragmented wrappers and niche task bots, users will soon get an agentic front door that navigates tools, code, and live workflows natively. If you build thin wrapper products around simple prompts, this move is a warning shot that OpenAI plans to swallow those use cases whole.

For the broader AI ecosystem, a single $122 billion round absorbs an unprecedented share of late-stage venture capital. By pulling in retail investors and ETF inclusion, OpenAI is clearly building the public market momentum needed for an impending IPO while forcing Anthropic and Google to double down on enterprise monetization.

We think pivoting away from consumer side quests like standalone video to focus entirely on enterprise agents and a single interface is smart business. But the pressure is enormous. Balancing competing cloud partners and massive capital expenditure means OpenAI must prove that autonomous agents deliver real-world economic returns, or the sheer weight of this valuation could become a drag.
