OpenAI teams up with Mazda and race teams on CAD models

Published Reach 38

OpenAI just revealed it's working with Chip Ganassi Racing engineers to turn 3D scans into editable CAD models and manufacturing drawings. The company is also collaborating with Mazda to explore new vehicle designs through simulation, relying on partner engineers to review outputs and sharpen the models.

OpenAI is pushing its models deeper into hard-core industrial manufacturing, teaming up with two automotive partners to tackle real-world design challenges.

First, the company is working with engineers at Chip Ganassi Racing to turn physical 3D scans directly into editable CAD models and manufacturing drawings.

Second, it is collaborating with Mazda to explore new vehicle designs through simulation. Across both projects, partner engineers are on the ground reviewing the outputs and pointing out where the models still fall short, feeding critical domain knowledge back to OpenAI.

Why it matters

Turning physical scans into clean, editable CAD files has always been a tedious bottleneck for engineers, especially where millimeter-level accuracy is non-negotiable. While frontier models have conquered code and 2D images, physical manufacturing has largely remained an untouched frontier.

We think teaming up with a top-tier racing outfit is a clever shortcut. Motorsport teams iterate parts at breakneck speed, making them the ultimate real-world stress test for generative models. Keeping human engineers in the loop to critique results also avoids the risk of shipping flawed designs straight to the factory. It clearly looks like early-stage research, but it signals that AI is finally ready to jump from software screens into heavy manufacturing.
