OpenAI launches Learning Accelerator in India with 500k free ChatGPT licenses
OpenAI just launched the Learning Accelerator in India, rolling out 500,000 ChatGPT licenses alongside training programs for educators and students over the next six months. It's also backing IIT Madras with a $500,000 research grant. India already hosts ChatGPT's biggest student base, and OpenAI wants to turn homework shortcuts into guided study.

ChatGPT has officially become India's favorite study buddy, with the country now home to the platform's largest student user base globally.
To keep millions of students from just copying homework answers, OpenAI just launched the OpenAI Learning Accelerator at the India Education Summit, marking an India-first push into classroom AI.
Half a million licenses and a research grant
OpenAI is putting real resources on the ground. First up is a $500,000 research grant awarded to IIT Madras, where researchers will study how AI impacts learning outcomes through the lens of cognitive neuroscience.
On the access front, OpenAI plans to distribute roughly 500,000 ChatGPT licenses over the next six months alongside structured training.
These licenses are going through targeted official channels. India's Ministry of Education will hand them to government school teachers in grades 1 through 12 for lesson planning, while the AICTE will roll them out to technical colleges nationwide. K-12 educators under the ARISE network are also getting access.
For students, the centerpiece is ChatGPT's study mode, a feature inspired directly by Indian user feedback that acts like a tutor by asking guiding questions instead of instantly giving away the final answer.
To lead the effort, OpenAI hired Raghav Gupta, former Managing Director for India and APAC at Coursera, as its new Head of Education for the region.
This comes right after OpenAI announced plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, alongside an India-specific ChatGPT Go plan priced at ₹399 per month with local UPI payment support and better Indic language performance in GPT-5.
Why it matters
For educators across India, this removes the cost barrier to state-of-the-art AI. Teachers drowning in administrative work get real relief, while students get a personalized study partner instead of a blunt shortcut machine.
From a business perspective, we think this is a masterclass in market capture. Emerging markets rarely convert well on standard Western subscription pricing, but by partnering directly with federal education bodies and funding elite local institutions, OpenAI is building brand loyalty with millions of future knowledge workers before rivals can blink.
The real test will be execution. Distributing half a million licenses is the easy part; training hundreds of thousands of public school teachers to meaningfully integrate AI into rigid curricula is a monumental task. Without relentless follow-through on training, many of these licenses risk becoming glorified digital paperweights.
