OpenAI accidentally leaks GPT-4.5 Turbo
OpenAI's web team just accidentally leaked teaser text for GPT-4.5 Turbo on major search engines ahead of an official announcement. The indexed snippets revealed a 256k token context window—double that of GPT-4 Turbo—and a knowledge cutoff of June 2024, hinting at a potential mid-year rollout. While the link currently leads to a 404 page, the move shows OpenAI is eager to counter Anthropic's Claude 3.

Search engines just ruined OpenAI's surprise party. Before the company could even post an announcement, product pages for an unreleased model popped up on Bing and DuckDuckGo.
The model in question is GPT-4.5 Turbo. While clicking the indexed links currently leads to a 404 error page, the cached preview text in search results revealed some juicy details about what is coming next.
Double the context, fresh cutoff date
According to the leaked teaser description, GPT-4.5 Turbo is OpenAI's fastest, most accurate, and most scalable model to date. It also claims a context window of 256,000 tokens, which works out to about 200,000 words. That is exactly double the 128K context window currently supported by GPT-4 Turbo.
Interestingly, the snippet lists a knowledge cutoff date of June 2024. That detail sparked speculation that the model might not actually launch until June. That would be quite unusual for OpenAI, which typically releases new models into user hands the moment they are announced.
Still, an official announcement could arrive much sooner. This Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of GPT-4's release. CEO Sam Altman is also scheduled to appear on Lex Fridman's podcast, mirroring his appearance right after GPT-4 launched a year ago. Altman also teased just days ago that a new model worth the wait was on the horizon.
Rumors about GPT-4.5 Turbo have circulated since at least December, with whispers suggesting potential video or 3D capabilities. However, this search leak made no mention of multimodal features.
Why it matters
Anthropic's Claude 3 just threw down the gauntlet by matching and beating GPT-4 across several benchmarks, while Google is busy testing Gemini 1.5's massive context window. OpenAI needed to remind everyone who runs the yard. Whether this index leak was an honest deployment blunder or a calculated leak, it lets OpenAI plant a flag and stop enterprise users from migrating to Claude 3.
For builders and power users, a 256K token context window is a massive functional upgrade, provided it delivers on retrieval accuracy. Processing 200,000 words is great, but as we know with existing models, large context windows often suffer from attention degradation and missed details. If OpenAI fixed that recall bottleneck, it will be a game changer for codebase analysis and legal document review.
However, pre-announcing a model with a June knowledge cutoff risks backfiring. OpenAI's secret sauce has always been immediate availability at launch. Floating a spec sheet months before general availability looks a bit like defensive marketing, and it gives competitors like Anthropic more time to press their advantage.
