OpenAI adds transparent backgrounds to GPT-Image-2

Published Reach 38

OpenAI just rolled out transparent background generation for its GPT-Image-2 API in preview. Developers can now generate reusable visual assets directly without manual cutouts, making it easy to drop generated objects straight into product shots, UI mockups, and ad layouts. Why it matters: It cuts out a tedious compositing step and makes gen-AI images instantly production-ready.

OpenAI just added transparent background generation to its GPT-Image-2 API, currently rolling out in preview.

Native cutouts hit the API

Developers can now prompt GPT-Image-2 to generate reusable visual assets with built-in transparency, completely skipping the tedious background removal step.

OpenAI highlighted use cases like product imagery, graphic design layouts, website mockups, and marketing materials.

The company also teased that more transparency-related features will be arriving soon.

Why it matters

While a transparent background might sound like a simple UI convenience, it tackles one of the biggest headaches in AI-driven design workflows.

Previously, builders had to daisy-chain separate background-removal models to make AI images usable in real products, adding extra latency, cost, and edge artifacts.

We think this brings generative image models one step closer to behaving like proper production-ready design engines rather than novelty illustration tools.

That said, how well it handles delicate edges, hair, and soft shadows will determine if teams can truly ditch dedicated cutout tools for good.
