OpenAI stops crashing when models hit capacity
OpenAI just deployed infrastructure upgrades and added compute to slash the annoying "model is at capacity" error. Instead of outright blocking your request during server spikes, the platform will now automatically retry in the background until it completes.
Anyone who relies on ChatGPT has probably run face-first into the dreaded message: "Selected model is at capacity. Please try a different model."
That disruption should be happening a lot less often now. OpenAI engineer Tibo announced that the company has rolled out a series of infrastructure adjustments and added more compute to significantly stamp out the error.
Quiet retries instead of hard blocks
On top of adding more raw compute, OpenAI reworked how it handles traffic spikes.
Instead of slamming the brakes on your prompt the second server limits are reached, the system will now automatically retry in the background and continue generating on its own. Tibo noted that if users still encounter the capacity alert out in the wild, they should keep reporting it so the team can track edge cases down.
Why it matters
We think this quality-of-life update tackles one of ChatGPT's most annoying daily friction points. For anyone generating long-form copy or running detailed coding workflows, having a prompt killed halfway through ruins the session; handling the queue under the hood keeps users moving.
It seems OpenAI is increasingly focused on the plumbing side of its service. Shipping smarter models is great, but hiding server-side turbulence behind smooth retries is what actually keeps real-world workflows from breaking.
